To be fair, it wasn't EVERY universe, but the farther you got from your own reality the more pronounced it was. I actually revisited this in A Voice From the Dark - the big bad couldn't exist in our reality beyond being a creature of sound - its actual body petrified upon entry.
Update: The spirit is now a boy, I believe because the actor transitioned. All the stuff with the sacrificing him to a god to make the magic gun is still canon
