Young vs. Old. Which is better? Just a lazy side-by-side comparison of the Tavern Bun.
A rat nerd. Sorceress outfit, for her tabletop session. Never got around colouring that messy morning rat.
Usually the mages happily showcase their belly to the portrait painter. Painter was bit surprised when Big Trainee Cat wasn't that enthusiastic, but didn't refuse either. Painter wasn't aware she's a Novice. Assumed she had the novice staff as a joke. It's extremely rare for novices to be that big.
It's just her raunchy jokes. Right? She doesn't store any significant amount of mana anymore. When she's invited to festivities as a respected guest, she insists the only proper way is wearing her old mage outfit for it.
With a number of new people to this account, I think a reminder is adequate. It would be nice if people refrained from posting my stuff on other sites, and especially Discord. In this year of 2026, seeing people still use that pile of data-harvesting garbage is truly an oof moment.
wip. Tavern Bun at some party, dressed in her old mage outfit. Scaring people with her raunchy jokes.
Usually she's self-regulating the fermentation pressure with tiny burps. But every now and then her burping reflex stops working without her noticing, until she realises the pressure build up. She doesn't really have any effective remedy other than sipping water and prodding her gut.
Academy considers portraits part of the "Battlemage Elegance" so they dont really keep a track on the budget spent on portraits. So Mage trainees might occasionally have some cheeky/joke portraits made. Graduating Mages send their official portraits around as part of their employment portfolio.
Big mage trainee cat getting her Novice Year portrait done. Portrait painter is quite used to these mages, so isn't bothered by some oddities typical to these mages.
Which emotion is most fun regarding how a character feels about their roundness? Confident, Oblivious, Embarrassed, Distressed, Something else?
This account doesn't have that much stuff yet. But which character has so far seemed interesting?

Bear from a while back, in higher resolution. She had a summer job at a burger place. Took the habit of enjoying burgers.

Bunch of novices, literally. Cat in the middle is some rich brat whose family believed they could just slap bunch of charms on her to prevent her from mana swelling. Clearly wasnt working, so they chucked her hastily into the academy to learn mana controlling.
Meanwhile at the Battlemage Academy. Someone's planning to sneak out for a drink later in the night.
Bun could well be young Tavern Bun, or her twin sister's daughter. Just nearly identical looking. Either way, it's a portrait from when she completed her Battlemage scholarship. Baroness at same age for comparison.
A picture hanging on the wall of The Jolly Battlemage tavern, depicting a young, bright-eyed Battlemage.
Makes sense that she would hire a helping hand at the tavern. Weight does slow her down much more than what it used to. Probably for the best that there is someone keeping an eye on her anyways.
Tavern Bun and Baroness are old friends, even if Baroness might not be too amused by how trashy her friend has become. She's always been about lewd jokes, but age and booze have gotten her even bit more unhinged. There's also the quite pungent waft of fermentation emanating from Tavern Bun.
She prefers to call it "allergies", low density mana puffing her up. Due to being low density, she wouldn't even make a good battlemage. She's given up on trying to keep herself slimmer with regular mana draining by mages. She's awkwardly shaped when her body is "saturated", but at least stable.
A non-spellcaster, but sensitive to absorbing residue mana. Probably could've learned to cast spells to vent excess mana, but just couldn't find time to do that, or tried to learn, but the process frustrated her. Might just accept that at that size she's "saturated" and wont absorb much more.
Ursine folk are adapted to harsh conditions where it's expected them to store energy for times when they need to burn off a lot of energy as well. Ursines ending up in large cities where cushier jobs are more available, tend to start puffing up when their high-calorie intake doesn't get burned off.
