A record-breaking Little Tern season at Spurn! A minimum of 116 pairs fledged 149 young, beating the previous best of 107 by 42 birds — almost 40%. Huge thanks to our wardens, January’s crowdfund supporters and The National Lottery Heritage Fund for funding the project. 📸 Tate Lloyd

🎉 A major milestone for the 2026 season! Today, the 100th Little Tern nest hatched at Beacon Ponds. It’s another fantastic milestone for Yorkshire’s only breeding colony of Little Terns and a testament to the dedication of our wardens, volunteers and project partners.

The 2026 Little Tern season at Beacon Lagoons is now well underway. Numbers built steadily through May and the first eggs appeared earlier than last year. Thanks to our wardens, volunteers and partners who help protect Yorkshire’s only Little Tern colony. 🐦

The 2026 season is well underway here at Beacon ponds - the first Little tern nest was recorded on the 26th of May and numbers of birds on eggs has risen quickly with a count of 60 this afternoon. The colony is best viewed from the new hide, which can be accessed from the north end of Beacon lane.

Wow! A very exciting discovery by one of our wardens, Tate, during his afternoon shift today. This Little Tern was first ringed as a chick at the Beacon Ponds colony back in 2013. It was recaptured in Senegal last April and fitted with a green colour ring - HKL. 1/2

The glorious weather has allowed us to carry out our first colony walkthrough of the season. An astonishing 91 Little Tern nests were counted, which is the highest count for the protection scheme (previous highest count of 70 in 1996). We're keeping everything crossed for a record-breaking season!

The Little Tern breeding season is now well underway, with more birds arriving daily. Electric fencing has been installed, and our wardens are doing a sterling job of monitoring the colony. Please remember to keep dogs on a lead & under control, and stay well back from the fence line. 1/2
