This is doing the rounds. Set aside that it is very US-coded. Why is no-one querying the coffee line? Two continua are conflated. Strength of coffee or amount of milk? You need two separate continua arranged on a grid, surely? You can have strong white coffee and weak black coffee.
Gimme 3 on all 3!
#TTRPGTHOUGHTS #RPGaDAY26 - 5 - Burden 1 It’s a continuum. But one division in game playing/design is “what you see is what you get” with every ability and every item in a backpack specified and recorded or more narrative games where things are more loosey goosey. 1
#RPGaDay2026 Day 4 - Charm. We once played an emergency replacement session where the Mcguffin was a charm bracelet, and one of the charms happened to be a One Ring equivalent (I think it was a silver elephant). Much cheesy cliched fun was had at the expense of Tolkien, Lewis and the rest 😁
I haven’t quote reposted many threads since #RPGaDAY2026 has started, but here’s one worth reading at last. (See if you can spot the exact point at which a respondee shows they’ve completely mossed the point of the OP.)
Day 4 of #RPGaDay, Charm: I love talky games, so I'd love to do more with persuasion mechanics. It's hard though. How do you build persuasion mechanics, but still retain the feeling that, as a player, it's not just a die roll and what you say matters?
Interesting thread that rapidly gets sidetracked into initiative. So - to repeat again - when I play The Black Hack. You roll to see if you go before or after the monsters. If you go before you roll to attack. Then everyone rolls to defend. Then if you go after, you roll to attack. 1/2
Also, they are very, very fucking weird about this issue.
#TTRPGTHOUGHTS #RPGaDAY26 - 4- CHARM 1 I remember an article in a fanzine from way back in the day (late ‘70s/early ‘80s - probably “Trollcrusher”) that the Charm Person spell should be higher level because of it’s effects on society. The argument went along the lines of: 1
One hour one shot introductory TTRPG scenarios. Purpose, design, choice and implementation of systems.
If you had to give a one hour discussion about any top c related to ttrpgs with no warning what would your topic be and what points would you bring up? #TTRPGQuestion #ttrpg
#3: POISE #RPGaDay2026 One should always have poise. Even when you roll a failure. Even when the system says you catastrophically failed according to the nefarious dice. Poise. Poise always exists no matter the dice say. Unless one CHOOSES this is not the case.
#RAPTURE Before I write my blog I recall I promised you photos. I’ve a roll-up banner. Standard 6’ thing like every else’s. It’s served well for a decade. (Well, I lost one but ordered & exact replacement so no difference.) When you unroll it & hook it onto the pole it leans slightly back. 1/x
Worth reposting just for the “dozens of people worldwide” line.
Worth posting in context as it is bang on topic.
#RAPTURE I was sitting at my table, iPad out, about to type a post about needing to design something to do during the last hour of a con. 3 young ladies sought out my table. I told them that it was 4:30, the con finished at 5pm. Did they want me to try to run a game In just 30 minutes? 1/3
#Rapture Father and three daughters - one of them TTRPG savvy. My Steampunk Dinosaur game. Bliss! (They would NOT stop thanking me and telling me how much they enjoyed it.)
#RAPTURE Mother and young son. He really wanted to play D&D5.5 because of the pretty pictures on the sheets. Dragonborn. After twatting the goblins and questioning a survivor they decided to report back with their info rather than completing the adventure. Phew!
#RAPTURE D6 Hack. Started with 4 players went up to 5 ended with three. Only the mum and youngest son saw it though. The daughter who’d wanted to played slipped away. The mum “I don’t know how to play. I don’t have the imagination.” Really got into it. It’s always the way. Mums lOVE TTRPGs.
#RAPTURE Mum and son. Superheroes. Played until the first villain fell but she was peppering me with questions. Apparently her son is just getting into cosplaying, Star Wars etc and is interested in TTRPGs. (I think it’s her really.) Apparently using figures would better for menopausal women!
#RAPTURE Still no game but talking to people. Old guy who goes to Expo. Hyper teenager who has just discovered D&D and is running games and is reading everything about it and have I heard of forgotten realms she’s getting all of that stuff and she’s just had a TPK and she wants to try old….
#RAPTURE slow this morning. 11:30 I thought I had a mum and son for a game but her struggled naming his character and decided not to play.
#RAPTURE I’m considering not putting out the X-Men today. But if I did that. If I decided what games people could and could not play that would make me a monster*. See also tables with more than one excitable child. * Dr Who - the voyage of the damned.
#RAPTURE given our recent debates about TTRPGs: Queuing for MacDonalds For breakfast. A group of grown big ass men (from con staff I presume) “All they want is Fortnite. They don‘t even know what Switch battles are!”
#TTRPGTHOUGHTS #RPGaDAY26 - 2 - Stature 1 TTRPGs exist on a continuum (several continua actually). But a major division is “what you see is what you get”. Lots of numbers on the PC sheet, itemised backpack etc. It that game you know how tall your characters is. And it may matter. 1
#RAPTURE “There’s only 37 mins left. I don’t know if I can finish a game in that time. What do you want? You want X-men?” What is it with X-Men today? Yes I finished the game in under 37mins!
#RAPTURE Another d6 Hack. Mum and dad and 3 v. Young and enthusiastic daughters. 😏 I was playing goblins getting knocked out etc but the dad was busy throwing them into a gorge. What kind of parenting is that?
