SRON Space Research Organisation Netherlands builds and uses space instrumentation for scientific research. These look up at the Universe to study for example exoplanets and black holes, and down at Earth to monitor greenhouse gases and aerosols.
Designing the next generation of space missions. In just ten days, students at the Alpbach Summer School developed space mission concepts on high-energy processes in planetary systems. SRON supported Dutch participants and Team Green as science tutor. #Alpbach2026 #SpaceScience #ESA #sronspace
SRON scientists developed HyperGas, an open-source system that converts hyperspectral satellite observations into greenhouse gas plume concentrations and emission estimates. A shared framework supports transparent, consistent monitoring of facility-level emissions: www.sron.nl/en/actueel/h...
New open-source system boosts greenhouse-gas monitoring using hyperspectral satellites
SRON scientists have developed an open-source system called HyperGas that enables users to convert raw hyperspectral satellite observations into greenhouse-gas plume concentrations and emission estima...

How do you catch the universe's faintest signals? With 20 years of perseverance, while battling fragile materials and system noise. SRON and TU Delft’s KID detectors are ready to open up new frontiers in astronomy, while by-catching breakthroughs in solid-state physics. www.sron.nl/en/actueel/2...
At our Science Days, colleagues across SRON come together to explore each other’s work. From identifying atmospheric signatures that may reveal life on distant planets to improving measurements of greenhouse gases and aerosols: we discuss science, technology and missions shaping the future of space.
Unraveling Cosmic Mysteries: Earth’s place in the Universe At SRON, we develop high contrast imaging technologies that suppress starlight and reveal faint exoplanets. This helps us study their composition and potential conditions for life. www.sron.nl/pijlers/tech...
From 1–4 June, SRON and ESA hosted the international CEOS AC-VC meeting in Leiden. More than 120 experts from agencies including ESA, NASA and JAXA discussed how satellite observations can improve monitoring of the ozone layer, air quality and climate forcing.
Today, SRON welcomed OCW education and science attachés and other OCW professionals from permanent representations worldwide and the European Commission. We discussed international collaboration, science diplomacy and geopolitics, and gave a tour of our missions and cleanroom.
🚀 Big milestone! BayesicFitting software, developed at @sron.bsky.social, has hit 1 million downloads! Converted to Python by Do Kester, this @astropy.org package is now essential for the #JWST pipeline, specifically for correcting data from the #MIRI instrument. #Python #OpenScience
Spotless vision for cosmic precision. In Leiden and Groningen, our cleanrooms enable nanolithography, assembly, and optical testing of flight models, even in vacuum conditions. Here, hardware is kept clean and precisely aligned to ensure instruments perform flawlessly in space.
It’s a wrap: NAC2026 From research updates and networking sessions to discussions on EDI and the future of astronomy, NAC2026 brought the astronomy community together in Egmond aan Zee. Congrats to Katrien Kolenberg and Alexandra Moroianu on their awards.
René passes on his fascination for the stars. SRON colleague René van der Windt donated four telescopes to the 125 year old Leiden School of Instrument Makers (LIS). The telescopes will now be used for optics classes and stargazing evenings with students and alumni.
NAC 2026 is just around the corner. Three days of science and exchange in Egmond aan Zee. We look forward to welcoming the community.
Unraveling cosmic mysteries: low-energy astrophysics. Hidden behind gas and dust lies a universe invisible to the naked eye. In infrared light, it reveals where stars and planets are born. At SRON, we explore this hidden cosmos.
Monitoring wildfires from space. The April fire near ’t Harde highlights rising wildfire risk. #TROPOMI on ESA Sentinel-5P detected increased CO and aerosols. ECMWF reports Europe is warming fastest, with more extremes and wildfires.

Optics for optimal Earth observation. The TROPOMI space instrument maps methane emissions across the whole world on a daily basis with a wide field of view. Zooming in requires higher spatial resolution. At SRON, we enable a new level of detail in Earth observation.
PhD Candidate in Experimental Astronomy Help SRON & TU Delft characterise exoplanets by pushing MKID detectors to their fundamental limits. We're hiring 2 PhDs (Condensed Matter & Detector Efficiency). Apply: werkenbijsron.nl/vacatures/ph...
Today is Earth Day. From space, we see the beauty of our Earth every day. Satellites help monitor our climate and protect our planet. The Dutch SPEXone instrument on NASA’s PACE satellite studies aerosols, a still uncertain factor in climate change.
From May 11 to 13, NAC 2026 brings the astronomy community together in Egmond aan Zee, hosted by SRON and KNA-RNAS. Science and connection come together, from plenaries to posters and social events. indico.kna-rnas.nl/event/2/
