IMO It's worse than that For many on the right, their politics has become their faith/belief. "Empathy is sin" is a religious belief, it just isn't a traditional Christian belief. To justify themselves they have changed their beliefs to match Trump & co w/o realizing it.
Sadly, many on the Right prioritize politics over faith these days.

I agree. There has to be a middle ground here because over correcting in the legalize drugs direction isn't working for communities.
