After ping-ponging back and forth between wins and losses for those remaining few matches, I've finally made it. Time to get my ass kicked in the Sun Room!

Dan Ladder ranking screen from Riichi City. The player is at 4th Dan (四段) with 1035/2000 points toward the next rank, shown at the top right. The ladder progresses left to right through three tiers: MOON (1st–4th Dan), SUN (4th–7th Dan), and GALAXY (7th Dan to Legend). Ranks shown as gold and silver medallion icons include C2, A1, 初段 (1st Dan), 二段 (2nd), 三段 (3rd), 四段 (4th, marked 'You're here!'), 五段 (5th), 六段 (6th), 七段 (7th), 八段 (8th), 九段 (9th), and 十段 (10th). A footer notes: "Your Dan controls which level of Ranked Match tables you're allowed to play at."

Got my first Counted Yakuman today! I was originally going for Chuuren Poutou but the 2 sou were exhausted before I could reach tenpai. Either way, two yakuman in one day, I'm happy with that.

Riichi City game result screen showing a dealer win by ron worth 20 han, 60 fu, 48000 points, labeled "Counted Yakuman." Yaku breakdown lists Riichi (1 han), Chinitsu (6 han), Sanankou (2 han), Dora (2 han), Akadora (1 han), Nukidora (2 han), and Ura (6 han). The hand consists entirely of sou tiles with three ones and three nines, and the winning tile is highlighted in green. Dora indicators show red dragon and west wind; ura dora indicators show two sou tiles and west wind, with North wind x2 also noted. The player character is Celestia Ludenberg from Danganronpa (dark hair in ringlet twintails, red eyes, wearing a black gothic lolita-style dress with a red tie), shown on the right, labeled "Dealer."

Backrooms is pretty good, but my wife and I had to stop almost exactly midway through. The found footage format FUCKED us up, incredibly nauseous. Guess we'll finish tomorrow?

What looks to be a Red Admiral Butterfly has landed on my screen, just chillin and taking in the breeze.

A black butterfly with orange and white markings, wings closed, resting on the outside of a window screen. Beyond the mesh, a light-colored building facade with windows is visible in the background.

I'm still having some wild swings in my matches, some combination of me doing dumb things and some players being really strong or lucky. However I'm noticing my hand speed increasing dramatically, so I'm definitely internalizing some of the knowledge. My average hand value has shrunk a lot though.

Just had a game where the first round one player had a yakuman and in the last round I started off in riichi, almost thinking I drew a tenhou. My heart skipped a beat for sure 😭

I had a crisis of the heart in my last ranked match. Setup for suuankou, healthy chance of completing it, but the next guy dealt in immediately. I *really* wanted to ignore the ron and just go for it but I also didn't want to pass up a layup. If I let it go I *could've* gotten it... maybe...

I've been getting smacked up in the Moon room, but honestly I've enjoyed playing there much more. It's been kind of amazing to be on the receiving end of some of these plays. I've taken a break from ranked for a bit to drill tile efficiency some more to increase my hand speed. It helped a bit!

3rd Dan today!

The core issue, I think, is that there were a lot of really loud people declaring the absolute truth that LLMs didn't work. As these barriers break one-by-one, a lot of people who had a false sense of security are going to get ego-whiplash since they haven't had time to adjust like the rest of us.

It won’t stop at math. Machines getting better at thinking through abstract problems than we are is going to be an emotional crisis for lots of people. I wish we were engaging that directly instead of having ridiculous shadow-debates about GPUs’ inherent thirst for water.

Actually I'm walking this back a bit, I feel like every time Zig is in the news cycle there is some form of needless antagonism involved. Like if Rust has the "Rust Evangelism Strike Force", Zig has the "Zig Crashout Blog Squad." The team does good work but man it can be annoying.

Part of me really respects Zig and wants to learn + get good at it. But at the same time, there is still a good deal of churn (e.g async redesign) and I'm not sure I want to invest the mental capacity just yet. When I learned Rust pre-1.0 I was in college and had time, these days not so much.

My first ever Yakuman in Riichi City: 13 Orphans! Extremely lucky and very happy to finally knock that out after so many close calls. The poor guy who dealt into it not only got hit with the Yakuman but also a double Ron, sending them into the negatives. Ouch!

If Anthropic really wanted to make an impact on the world they'd point Fable at the Rust compiler and just have it grind tokens until we get compile times down to Go even when using fancy abstractions. Every time my Rust CI/CD runs I feel like I'm setting a tree on fire.

There is an extreme amount of anxiety over the age verification stuff on Bsky. I really think there needs to be a coordinated effort to move these people to non-US PDSs and alternate app views.

I've honestly gotten so much worse at mahjong the more I've learned. I think I'm at that late beginner/early intermediate stage where I'm overthinking things or trying to get too fancy. I haven't been able to get to 3rd Dan even hanging out in the Star room. Still having fun, just need to git gud!

Feeling a bit more confident seeing patterns and building towards more valuable hands. I started this match off with a solid hand that was already 1-shanten, but I realized with a bit of moxie and some risk I could make something beautiful. Very close to a counted yakuman, but I fell just short.

Riichi City's game spectator UI, showing a match. The point of view player has a hand showing red 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, and 7 pin as well as red 5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, and 8 sou. The player has drawn a white dragon as well. The player has also kita'd two North Winds.

The player is in tenpai, waiting for either 5 or 8 sou. Their hand is glowing with a flaming aura, indicating there is a chance of a yakuman.

I do find it funny how we pretend as though prior to Claude all code was beautifully handcrafted, 100% original, and well understood... as if people hadn't been copy pasting from SO or bringing in random npm packages. I could forgive non-programmers for this, but some people are just dishonest.
