We commit to reckoning with the unspeakable violence and also to transforming our grief into action, moving in solidarity with all who are resisting colonialism and authoritarianism.

This also means grasping that the authoritarian turn we fight in the U.S. government today has its roots in the very founding of this country.

Today, on Tisha b’Av, when we mourn the destruction of sacred sites, it is our practice to weep, sitting on ground that cries out to us. It is our responsibility to grieve and reckon with the history of this land, forged through the genocide of Indigenous peoples.

Last week, JVP Executive Director @stefaniefox.bsky.social sat down with the brilliant journalist and citizen of the Cherokee Nation Rebecca Nagle to discuss her new podcast, First America, which is about the 250 year history of American fascism and settler colonialism.

“When we think about where could authoritarianism in the US be coming from, the answer to that question is that part of our government has always been authoritarian.”

Last week, the UN reported that the Israeli military has been deliberately targeting children throughout the genocide, and that 30% of those killed in Gaza were children. These findings from the UN are devastating but not surprising.

JVP commends the American Academy of Religion for its “Resolution in Solidarity with Gaza." The resolution condemns the Israeli regime’s policies of genocide and scholasticide in Palestine, defined by the UN as the “intentional effort to comprehensively destroy the Palestinian education system.”

Palestinian authorities say Israel has violated the U.S.-backed ceasefire 3,000 times since agreeing to a ceasefire deal last October, killing more than 900 civilians since then.
