One surprising thing from the Trump era is the level of cowardness and capitulation exhibited by institutions of power. Even in the face of evidence that pushback works and that the law is on their side, they continue to fall in line. It's a stain that will be hard to erase from history.

(Politico) - ABC programs are already tempering their election coverage ahead of the midterms to avoid angering President Donald Trump, a lawyer for the broadcast company told a federal judge on Tuesday .. @politico.com $DIS www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

The practical demise of the NSF, including the SBE division, deserves a coordinated and forceful response from higher education leadership. Instead, what we've gotten is collective silence. History will not look kindly upon this group.

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...

The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

Khashoggi's assassination was in hindsight one of the highly salient norm-shattering moments of impunity that helped recalibrate contemporary expectations for outrageous crimes: if you're rich & powerful enough, in the words of the President of the United States, "they just let you do it"

The intent is clear: "The admin previously fired the N.S.F.’s independent oversight board. And it has canceled or delayed thousands of grants across both agencies as part of its quest to punish elite universities and eliminate spending President Trump and his aides view as 'woke' "

Unless Congress reclaims its power, this will just become the new normal. A good first step would be to impeach Vought. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/02/u...

This is a nice piece that covers a number of ways to address student use of AI in writing. However, these strategies target in-person instruction and smaller classes. Combating AI use in large, asynchronous courses, where universities are pursuing more enrollment strategies remains a big challenge.

Teachers work second jobs because they are paid so little. Teachers use their own money or beg for donations to buy school supplies. Teachers work in school districts that provide little infrastructure or staff support. Yet, my man here thinks teaches have the energy for "woke" indoctrination.

"You wouldn’t need to do it if you didn’t have what we’re seeing with some of these woke teachers and these woke lessons that are going on, and the indoctrination that’s taking place here,” Biggs said during a 2025 radio interview. Story by @caitlinsievers.bsky.social

This is an important victory for democracy, but the tragedy is that two SC judges will concur with ANYTHING Trump wants to do. The only way to safeguard against this extremism is to expand the Court.

#BREAKING: Over public dissents from Justices Thomas and Alito, #SCOTUS *denies* the Trump administration’s request for a stay in the mail-in ballots case. The USPS Rule will remain blocked—almost certainly through the midterms.
