When we say that we hope this post is ‘awesome,’ we don’t mean we want it to be expressive of awe or terror. We mean that we hope you like it. This reduction of a word's intensity is called ‘semantic bleaching.’

Etymology of the day: in the expression ‘just deserts’, ‘deserts’ is an old past participle of the French ‘deservir’, meaning ‘deserve’. To get your just deserts is to get what you deserve. ‘Desert’ in this sense is obsolete, which is why lexicographers see ‘just desserts’ popping up everywhere.

Final day to submit. You have till 23:59 GMT today (Saturday 15 Feb) to submit to Micro Fiction Comp (100 words, no theme) & our anthology (500 words, theme of SEASONS). Cash prizes! Huge thanks to everyone who has subbed. Good luck! www.nationalflashfictionday.co.uk
