Humpback whales are using two important migration stopover sites for two differing purposes - one largely for social interaction, the other for resting mothers and calves. Griffith's Dr Raphael Mayaud found Hervey Bay was more like a 'playground' and Moreton Bay a 'much-needed pitstop'.

📢 New publication! 📢 We extend the known range of a critically endangered population of southern right whales by 1,500 km northward. Also the first known sighting of a southern right whale found north of the equator! 😲 With ~50 mature adults remaining, this has important management implications.
This week I presented at a stakeholder workshop in Okinawa to discuss responsible whale tourism. I have been studying whale-watch and swim-with-whale tourism in Japan since 2022. Whale tourism is growing steadily in Japan yet not govt regulated.
