🎺 Announcing the Agentic AI Investigative Journalism Challenge Winners! A few months ago we challenged journalists and computing/info/data scientists to develop agent skills for Claude that could be used to advance investigative journalism.

@jackbandy.com and I are presenting new work on gender bias in story generation at the EvalEval workshop @ #ACL2026! We know tropes in film and TV are often implicitly gendered, i.e., nothing in the trope's description marks it as gendered, but one gender is overrepresented in creative depictions.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

New paper in #FAccT2026 by Megha Govindu, myself, Sorelle Friedler and Danaé Metaxa! Motivated by genAI’s potential involvement in media production, we leverage network measures to evaluate gender biases in LLM-generated film screenplays. Kudos to @meghag.bsky.social for leading this endeavor ✨

Now that AI is writing our movies, will it let women talk? In our paper, we leverage the #BechdelTest and other social network-based measures to evaluate LLM-generated movie scripts for gender bias. Join us today at ACM #FAccT2026: Thursday, June 25th at 10:45 am in Joyce to hear more!

Last week at CSCW, Catherine Han presented our work on journalists' unmet needs for protecting against harassment online. While the work targeted Twitter/X, it surfaces several nuances in users' needs that span future platforms as well (e.g., not wanting to filter out threats or visibly block users)

Pretty blown away by this paper from Piotr Sapiezynski and team at Northeastern and Princeton, presented at #CSCW2024: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... For lots of good legal and moral reasons, Facebook doesn't allow advertisers to explicitly target ads to "White Republicans" or "Black Democrats"..

On the Use of Proxies in Political Ad Targeting | Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction

Detailed targeting of advertisements has long been one of the core offerings of online platforms. Unfortunately, malicious advertisers have frequently abused such targeting features, with results that...
