I've spent time in the midst of three civil wars and multiple authoritarian regimes, and a weird normalcy is very typical. People still have to work their jobs and feed their families. Markets are still held, and religious services go on. The threats just behind the surface can be easy to forget.

It’s so weird how we’re all just working like this is still a normal country.

The full story is here, and it includes multiple other cases of people, including other people who entered at ports of entry (not illegally) who were clearly detained and shipped to El Salvador solely on the basis of their tattoo and nothing more. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

The men disappeared to El Salvador because of their tattoos

The Trump administration sent Venezuelans to El Salvador’s most infamous prison. Their families are looking for answers.

The immigration crackdown is central to Trump's strategy to undermine democracy. What it can do that purging opponents or controlling the power of the purse cannot is enable military deployment on US soil & rally militia to enact their agenda unchecked. w/ @abbeyst.bsky.social for #USAPP

On the USAPP blog @stephrschwartz.bsky.social @lseir.bsky.social and @abbeyst.bsky.social look at the #Trump administration's harsh #immigration policy. They argue these actions are part a strategy for dismantling #democracy by amassing coercive power & rallying pro-government right-wing militias.

@stephrschwartz.bsky.social and I wrote a post for @lseblogs.bsky.social on how the immigration crackdown can help the administration mobilize US troops on US soil, and rally militia -- which would enable even more harm to groups this administration targets, like Trans Americans.

In case it’s not clear, ICE is getting the names of pro-Palestine students to target from infamous pro-Israel watchdog groups Campus Watch, Canary Mission, etc Those groups — not part of govt in any way — have enormous power right now with a direct pipeline to the deportation machine.

NEW! Sworn declarations filed last night confirm the Trump admin sent INNOCENT people to rot in prison El Salvador, including a professional soccer player jailed and tortured by the Maduro regime, who entered this country LEGALLY to seek asylum, and who has NO CRIMINAL RECORD in either country.

I am the immigration attorney for Jerce Reyes Barrios, born in January 16, 1989 in Venezuela. 2. In February and March 2024, Mr. Reyes Barrios marched in two demonstrations in Venezuela protesting the authoritarian rule of Maduro. At the second demonstration, he was detained and taken to a clandestine building where he was tortured (electric shocks and suffocation) along with other demonstrators. 3. Shortly after his release, he fled Venezuela for the United States. He registered with CBP One in Mexico, then presented himself to CBP officials on the day of his appointment. He was taken into custody and detained at Otay Mesa Detention Facility in September 2024. 4. We applied for asylum, withholding of removal, and CAT protection in December 2024. His final individual hearing is set for April 17, 2025 before Judge Robinson at the Otay Mesa Immigration Court. 5. On March 15, 2025, Mr. Reyes Barrios was deported to El Salvador with no notice to counsel or family. It was not until March 18, 2025 that counsel was able to reach an ICE official and learn that he had in fact been deported. 6. Mr. Reyes Barrios was/is a professional soccer player in Venezuela. He has never been arrested or charged with a crime. He has a steady employment record as a soccer player, as well as a soccer coach for children and youth. 7. Initially, Mr. Reyes Barrios was placed in maximum security at Otay Mesa and accused of being a Tren de Aragua gang member. The accusation is based on two things. First, he has a tattoo on his arm of a crown sitting atop a soccer ball with a rosary and the word "Dies." OHS alleges that this tattoo is proof of gang membership. In reality, he chose this tattoo, because it is similar to the logo for his favorite soccer team Real Madrid. See logo below. [pictures of the tattoo and the pictures of the logo]. 8. Second, OHS reviewed his social media posts and found a photo of Mr. Reyes Barrios making a hand gesture that they allege is proof of gang membership. 9. After submitting a police clearance from Venezuela indicating no criminal record, multiple employment letters, a declaration from the tattoo artist who rendered the tattoo, and various online images showing similar soccer ball/crown tattoos and explaining the meaning of the hand gesture, Mr. Reyes Barrios was transferred out of maximum security. 10. Nevertheless on March 10th or 11th, he was transferred from Otay Mesa to Texas without notice. Then, on March 15, 2025, he was deported to El Salvador. Counsel and family have lost all contact with him have no information regarding his whereabouts or condition.

Rubio’s position seems to be: - We get to say who is a terrorist. Our decision is final. It can’t be challenged. Just trust us. - Once we decide you are a terrorist, we can immediately deport you. No judges. - After we deport you, we can make you rot in a foreign prison. No criminal charges needed.

"lack of specific information"..."actually highlights the risk they pose" confirms ICE is targeting people because of *who they are*, not for what they have done. in polisci, this is known as collective targeting & it is the basis for eliminationist politics by expulsion, murder, disappearance.

Adam Isacson@adamisacson.com · last yr.

You've probably seen it, but we should keep raising up what an ICE official actually wrote to a court on Monday: "The lack of a criminal record does not indicate they pose a limited threat. In fact… the lack of specific information about each individual actually highlights the risk they pose."

Inter-con, USIP security contractor, had contract terminated by USIP but still had one physical key to building. DOGE went to contractor VP's house and said "you either let us in or we're gonna cancel all your other government business." Inter-con then turned on USIP, and used key to let DOGE in.

bsky.app/profile/reil... this is bonkers and deeply disturbing. Private security, DOJ, DOGE, and the DC police together worked to take control over a private building the government *does not own* and dismiss the staff *whom the president does not employ,* removing them, it seems, with armed force
