🎆 150 collisions and thousands of particles detected at once! A special test run allowed CMS to test the next generation of particle-tracking and identifying algorithms, years before the High-Luminosity LHC comes online. 👉 Read more in the CMS Briefing: cms.cern/news/glimpse...

This week I'm at DESY Hamburg for the CMS trigger workshop, where we devise cunning plans to collect great data with CMS at the High Luminosity LHC from 2030 onwards. The big question: how much compute and storage can we afford? Today I tried to bring some physics perspective 😎
That's a first: a signature under a mattermost message. #cernlife

Back from holidays but still with my mind in paradise. [that was our boat for a week; I took the picture]
Impressive analysis, in particular what concerns low-momentum electron reconstruction. Really low-momentum!

It's the end of the LHC! 16 years of success! 💪 Next: no beam for several years as the accelerator as well as the experiments get a huge upgrade towards our next milestone: the HL-LHC NB: nice #douglasadams reference.
So long #LHC and thank you for all the collisions 👋 Today, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, comes to the end of an extraordinary chapter in its scientific journey. Find out more: home.cern/cern-bids-fa...

Nice catching up with @cleonidopoulos.bsky.social !
Remembering with @stevenlowette.bsky.social the "realistic conference programme adjustments" made to theory talks at the ICHEP conference after the lack of a 750 GeV signal confirmation by ATLAS and CMS. Chicago 2016.
Today in the CMS opening plenary session a slide was shown listing a talk I gave in 2006 😱 Also a picture from 2009 was shown... I'm officially "less young" now 😆
So @geschept.bsky.social I'll be visiting ISOLDE for the first time on Thursday. Clarinval is visiting CERN 😎

Search for electroweak scale dijet resonances in pile-up collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for dijet resonances in the mass range of 100-250 GeV is presented using proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy ...

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

😯 I know several colleagues in that situation. Very disruptive if followed through.
lots of discussion on how this will affect tech jobs, but once again this applies to academia also every professor you know on a visa will now have to leave the US for a green card, sometimes for multiple years. many will give up in the process. universities may not give them back their jobs.
