Inspired by the fable of the scorpion and the turtle, which is a variation on the more common version featuring a frog in place of the turtle.

In the standard version, a scorpion wants to cross a river. Because it can’t swim, it asks a passing frog to carry it across on its back. The frog hesitates, concerned that the scorpion will sting. The scorpion reassures the frog: “If I sting you, we both die—you have nothing to worry about.” The frog is convinced, but halfway across the river, the scorpion stings it. “Why?” gasps the frog, as they both drown. “I couldn’t help it,” says the scorpion. “It’s my nature.”

In the turtle variation, the scorpion still (tries to) sting, but scrapes harmlessly off the turtle's shell, leaving the turtle peeved but unscathed.

Like the scorpion, humans have compulsions they can't repress, even when it is in their best interest. I see this as a story about trusting your intuition (and not allowing others to convince you otherwise), anticipating & mitigating risk, and showing kindness while enforcing boundaries. I can't change others, but I can use my own strength to protect myself, trying to be a turtle instead of a frog.
