I'm thinking the mental mechanism going on here is that the more bleak your opinion of the current moment the more serious your politics are presumed to be (by a certain type of person). If anything, arguing that things "aren't as bad as that" has an air of privilege about it. "Sure, for you"

they/them might be giants ☭@babadookspinoza.bsky.social · 7mo agoI do think this is a far-reaching phenomenon impacting everything from moral laws to traffic laws—when the system isn’t working for people and is actually fucking them over constantly, they rely on small acts of protest against it to retain their dignity, even if those acts are grossly misdirected.
This article is shitty in such a specific 2015 way that it almost makes me nostalgic

Calling health insurance companies I have gotten fuck all being polite and have only seen results when I threaten to sue and act like an asshole. Someone withholding my health insurance is trying to kill me. I don't care if you're a private in that army, I'm treating you like an enemy combatant.

I was really shaken by that article about AI-induced delusions that was going around yesterday and it makes me feel like we're just in the stone age in terms of how we view the intersection of mental health issues and morality
