Founded in 1886, we serve the current students and staff of St Hugh's College, University of Oxford. https://linktr.ee/sthughslibrary
Welcome (back) to Oxford from us at your college library. What’s been happening here over the summer?
Wishing you all a wonderful break. See you in October!
A key part of preparing this term's exhibition was reaching out to alumni for their reminiscences. We heard from Delyth Jewell (2005), Bijan Sheibani (1997), Sarah Moss (1994), and James Morris (1996). Swipe to read what they had to say about their time studying English at St Hugh's.
Vacation loans are now active – borrow now and return on 12th October.
Happy Summerween! Here are some recommendations of summer-set horror and mysteries to celebrate the occasion with: 1. It by Stephen King (Popular Literature KIN) 2. Lost Boys (DVD LOS) 3. Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier (829.3 DUM)
Dreaming of summer… Summer by Edith Wharton (829.3 WHA) #summer #bookstagram #reading #oxfordlibrary
You may know that our alumna, Lady Kofoworola Ademola (née Moore), was the first black African woman to graduate from the University of Oxford. Did you also know that she read for a combination of classes in English, History and French in preparation for a career in teaching in her native Nigeria?
And the winner of the Popular Literature Poll is... Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, AND A Hymn to Life by Gisèle Pelicot. Both books received the same amount of votes! Keep your eyes peeled for the arrival of these books, plus other titles that performed well in the poll.
Happy Pride Month from the St Hugh's Library Team!

These exams papers and other ephemera give a flavour of what it might have been like to be an English student at St Hugh’s in the 1940s.
The Weston Library is now showing its new exhibition titled “Pets & Their People.” This new exhibition will highlight the stories of people’s relationships with their animals… or maybe animals’ relationships with their humans. This might be Biscuit and Flapjack’s favourite exhibition yet!
Are you already thinking about what you might want to read over the summer? Have suggestions? In 5th week we will be running our Popular Literature Poll! Email or fill out our Book Suggestions form located on our website to recommend some our your most sought-after titles.
It’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Getting back into the swing of things can get quite stressful. Here are some books on wellbeing from our collection!
Did you know that the introduction of English as a subject was a fiercely contested issue in late nineteenth century Oxford? It was seen as a ‘soft option’ when compared with the well-established classics (Literae Humaniores) that had been taught for centuries.
Here’s a reminder of what study resources and aids are available in the library. We have noise cancelling headphones, charging cables, magnifiers, coloured acetate, DVD players, white boards, audio headphones, book & laptop stands and ear plugs!
Did you know that we have an extensive collection of amazing stories in translation? Here’s a stack of some of our favourites!
Librarians when they catch students sneaking their buddies into the library… Please be reminded that the Library is for current St Hugh's members only.
Trinity Term is always stressful with deadlines, exams, and papers looming. Take a break when you can to destress with our wellbeing display. There are tons of goodies from stickers and colouring pages, to fidget toys, books, and more.
You may have walked by them 1,000 times but have you stopped to check them out? In the lobby we have a wonderful array of popular science and history periodicals that you are welcome to read within the library. The display is updated almost weekly so take a look when you can.
1. Are you using a VPN? That may interfere with the remote print website. 2. Are you removing the ox.ac.uk from your SSO when logging into the Library computers? 3. Are you using Eduroam for your wifi? Some university websites will not work on your laptops if you do not choose this wifi option.
As the weather continues to get nicer, here’s your reminder to not bring food into the library as it attracts unwanted visitors. [Images from British entomology: being illustrations and descriptions of the genera of insects found in Great Britain and Ireland … Shelfmark: RBS N115 (CUR)]
Welcome back everyone! We hope you are feeling well rested and ready to hit the books. If you have any questions, feel free to come by the library office like Biscuit here.
Here are some highlights from the first issue of the JCR Newsletter ‘Hugh’s News’ from Michaelmas 2002. The tone and content of the various incarnations of the JCR publications have shifted over time in response to levels of student engagement and concern, ranging from the jocular to the serious.
And the winners are 🥁… “The Eyes of Gaza” “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” “Wilting: a poetry memoir on love, loss, and grief“ We will add these and a few of the top performing books to our Pop Lit section. Keep an eye out for their arrival and display in the upcoming weeks. ✨📚✨
