Academia is a wonderfully strange place where you might hear, "this is a great piece of research that will make a big splash," and "it's just that I think it's all wrong," as one, unbroken sentence. Anyway, I've survived my prelim defense and am now ABD.

SO... democracies and war. It's easy to imagine that democracies, with all of their inefficiencies, are somehow hampered when it comes to war. It's perfectly logical when you consider that unity of effort and unity of command are principles of war invoked by doctrine & military maxims.

This reads like democracies have a fundamental military advantage over authoritarian regimes and I’m not sure that’s the case if we look at any example that isn’t post-Cold War US vs MENA

Military forces designed by authoritarian regimes are optimized for authoritarian purposes. They aren’t dumb. They didn’t get into power by accident. They may be ruthless, immoral, or evil… but not dumb. So their force design and management should not be dismissed as just budget restraints.

My take is that senior officers are completely unprepared for this moment. When demo is healthy, there is little tension btw adhering to civilian control & serving democracy Faced w/ the manifest clash in principles these missions present, they are doing what's familiar--following orders.1/
