Vacancy: Operations and Finance Manager.
The Stuart Hall Foundation seeks to appoint an experienced Operations and Finance Manager to lead on governance, administration, finance, compliance and organisational systems, ensuring the charity operates efficiently, meets its regulatory obligations and has the infrastructure required to deliver its strategic objectives.

Working closely with the Executive Director, team, Treasurer, and Trustees, the Operations and Finance Manager will also support fundraising activities to ensure the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the Foundation.

VACANCY: OPERATIONS AND FINANCE MANAGER.

Role Title: Operations and Finance Manager.

Salary: £42,000 FTE (£25,200 per annum, three days per week).

Working Days: Part-time (three days per week), Monday to Wednesday.

Contract: Permanent.

Location: Remote within the UK, with occasional travel to meetings and events. Holidays: 25 days’ annual leave plus public holidays (pro rata for part-time staff).

Benefits: Flexible remote working, a supportive and collaborative team culture, and opportunities for training and professional development.

Pension: Workplace pension scheme with a 5% employer contribution, matched by a 5% employee contribution.

Probation Period: Three months.

Deadline for applications: Sunday 2nd August 2026, 11:59pm.

Martha Awojobi, the new Vice Chair of the Stuart Hall Foundation, shares her thoughts on what it means to be stepping into the role:

“It is such an honour to step into the role of Vice Chair at the Stuart Hall Foundation, supporting the team to deliver on an incredible strategy at a time when political education is needed more than ever. The Stuart Hall Foundation’s work brings together those who are building knowledge from the margins across so many different sectors, giving anyone who is interested in building a socially just society an entry way into a community where rich and creative forms of knowledge are being produced. The work goes beyond knowledge production just for the sake of it but is deeply invested in how this knowledge becomes embedded into practice. I am really looking forward to expanding our partnerships with activists and organisers to bring theory and practice together through communities of solidarity. And as a huge governance nerd, I will be continuing to work with the board to build governance structures that reflect our organisational values and meet our current political moment.”

Our outgoing Vice Chair, Paula Kahn, shares some reflections on her time as a Trustee of the Stuart Hall Foundation over the past decade:

“I have been proud to be a SHF Trustee for the last 10 years, working closely with Gilane, Catherine and the family and our wonderful Trustees and staff. We have been through rocky and exhilarating times but were always clear about our vocation, to build an organisation which would take Stuart’s thoughts and values into a quickly evolving world. However different that world looks sometimes the underlying insights and ideas of Stuart remain deeply relevant.

“I am glad to have made a small contribution to ensuring the survival and indeed the flourishing of the SHF and hope to be around for another 10 years to see the Foundation’s growing success in building an ever-expanding cohort of artists and activists who champion and develop Stuart’s work.”

Professor Angela McRobbie, the new Chair of the Stuart Hall Foundation, shares her thoughts on stepping into the role:

“I am honoured and delighted to be appointed as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Stuart Hall Foundation. The writing and ideas of Stuart Hall have underpinned both the teaching and research I have done throughout my academic career and, I hope, how I have done that work. Stuart was, as has often been noted, someone who thrived on a collaborative, interactive, conversational style of working. He loved the roundtable, the seminar, as well as the inter-generational encounters, whether during his university years or later when he was working in arts and cultural organisations. He always exuded a welcoming demeanour, he was, among so many other things, a sociologist of everyday life, an avid social observer.

“The Stuart Hall Foundation has done so much to reflect the values that Stuart upheld, social justice, social inclusion, the necessity of extending the politics of difference, diversity and equality. Above all Stuart was one of the great thinkers of the post-war period. His contribution to cultural life today remains as important now as it has been at so many key turning points over the decades. I look forward to working with the team and contributing to the range of activities. I very much hope that we will be able to support more programmes, projects and events in a wide range of locations, nationally and internationally.”

Over the past decade, the Foundation has grown and flourished, building on Stuart Hall’s unique legacy as one of our most important public intellectuals and educators. Our Peer Network of scholars, fellows and activists has grown to 150 individuals working in different fields across a number of national and international institutions. Our celebrated public programme attracts a growing audience each year, creating vital spaces for people to think collectively, connect with each other and debate the pressing questions of our time.
