“You ought to take more photos,” Ximena said one evening as Jayce walked her to the elevator down the hall from Viktor’s apartment.

“We take plenty,” Jayce replied. Viktor’s box camera was always close at hand. They had countless photos of Alexandra sleeping, and eating, and looking up at one of them in contentment.

“Not just of the baby. When she’s older, she’ll want pictures of herself with her father. You’ll want that, too,” she added.

Jayce almost stumbled.

He thought of the photo of him with his own father, framed on the wall of his childhood bedroom, and the last family portrait with all three of them, in its permanent place on his mother’s mantelpiece. There were many more photos, tucked away in albums, of parents and grandparents and extended relations.

Viktor possessed a single photo of his parents, from their wedding day, one of the few items he’d collected from their home in the undercity after his mother’s death. He showed it to Jayce once, years ago, when they had been drinking and he was in a sentimental mood. Jayce remembered thinking that Viktor looked a great deal like his mother.

Almost without meaning to, Jayce imagined their daughter knowing Viktor’s face only from old Academy photos and newspaper clippings from the early days of Hextech: serious and unsmiling, not the way he was with Alexandra.

“Right. We can…” Jayce’s heart did a slow, painful somersault. “We can take more pictures.”
