We are BABEL, the Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab at Syracuse University

At the CNY Environmental Science & Studies Conference, PhD student Maya presented findings from her research examining humpback whale habitat use in the Gulf of Maine across a 20-year period. This work draws on tracking data to understand how habitat selection has shifted over time.

Recently, BABEL members retrieved and redeployed six hydrophones to listen for the calls of North Atlantic right whales! This is part of an ongoing project working to help track when and where right whales are present, giving researchers and managers information to protect this species.

We are BABEL, the Bioacoustics and Behavioral Ecology Lab at Syracuse University! We focus on the ecology and evolution of acoustic signaling and animal behavior. Research in the lab spans the fields of behavioral ecology, evolution, bioacoustics, oceanography, and conservation biology.
