San Diego County has proclaimed a local emergency ahead of a potentially historic El Niño season, following Governor Newsom’s statewide emergency proclamation as we prepare for heavy rain, repeated storms, and significant flooding risks.

We are ONE MONTH AWAY from our annual Día de los Muertos celebration! 💀🧡🕯️ This year, we’re Recordando los Sonidos del Pasado — remembering the sounds and music that brings our loved ones and memories back to life.
South Bay families have been saying it for years. Now, the the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency that works alongside the CDC, has confirmed it: the air around the Tijuana River has reached levels of hydrogen sulfide that can harm human health.
For our neighbors in Shelltown, Southcrest, Mountain View, and Logan Heights: join us for a community meeting to prepare for the upcoming El Niño season. 📅 Wednesday, September 30 ⏰ 6:00–8:00 p.m. 📍 Cesar Chavez Elementary School
You can’t ignore the hard numbers when they show the staggering economic toll of the Tijuana River pollution crisis.
Happy Friday from some of our cutest County residents! 🐶🐱💛 Did you know SNAP’s Neuter Scooter brings spay and neuter services to local County Library branches? Spaying and neutering are an important part of keeping your pets healthy and happy. Apply online at www.snap-sandiego.org/application....
Thirty years of delicious food, local culture, and entrepreneurship came together in the heart of District 1 at the 30th Annual Taste of Gaslamp! 🍽️🎉
For 65 years, CETYS Universidad opened doors to advanced skills, critical thinking, and professional opportunity while building connections between academia and industry across Baja California and San Diego. What began in 1961 as a campus in Mexicali has grown into a world-class university system.
As a proud Latina, Latine Heritage Month is personal to me. In District 1, our heritage is part of everyday life. You see it in our teachers, business owners, labor leaders, and neighbors.
Have you experienced physical or mental health impacts from the Tijuana River pollution crisis? The CDC and San Diego County are conducting a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) survey to better understand how sewage pollution is affecting South Bay households.
Students should never have to fear being forcibly taken while heading to their classroom. What happened at San Diego City College this week is unacceptable.
Labor Day is more than a day off. It’s a day to honor the workers and labor organizations whose solidarity fought for fair wages, safer workplaces, and dignity on the job.
Thank you, Vice Chair Montgomery Steppe and Supervisor Anderson, for bringing forward the Empower East County Business Fund. Spring Valley is home to local shops, entrepreneurs and big ideas, including many in District 1.
Residents across South County and the Tijuana River Valley have continuously borne the brunt of toxic hydrogen sulfide spikes that far surpass the state’s safety standard.
Families and small businesses already pay some of the nation’s highest electricity rates. We should not ask them to subsidize Big Tech’s enormous energy demands or leave communities to bear the environmental costs.
The County declared our 25th local emergency for the Tijuana River pollution crisis. Yes, 25. We will not stop calling this crisis what it truly is: an environmental and public health emergency.
The County doesn’t set utility rates, but we represent the people who pay them, and we have a responsibility to use our voice on their behalf.
The cost of electricity is no longer just a routine bill—it's an affordability crisis. This legislative package puts affordability first by demanding that before any utility expense is passed down to working families, it must be proven necessary, reasonable, & in the public interest.
Today, I honored Audie de Castro for his years of service as Honorary Consul of the Philippines, expanding access to consular services, strengthening connections with the Philippines, and championing Filipino-American leadership across our communities.
I'm proud of the County’s fight to enter Otay Mesa Detention Center and successfully conduct a public health inspection. This process has always been about protecting the health and safety of everyone connected to the facility, including detainees, visitors, staff, their families, and San Diegans.

Congratulations to Second Chance’s Job Readiness Training Class 296 graduates! 🎓 Their hard work is a testament to what’s possible when San Diegans have access to meaningful pathways to employment and stability.
Team Aguirre joined UFCW Local 135 in celebrating the grand opening of their new headquarters. More than just a new building, this space was built by labor, for labor and will serve as a hub for organizing, advocacy, and supporting the workers who keep our region moving.
Expanding opportunity starts with expanding access to education. I visited National University's future campus in National City to help envision how this new space can meet the needs of our South County students, workforce, and local employers.
No family should have to choose between opening a window and protecting their health. Eligible residents in our hardest-hit South County communities can now receive up to three FREE high-efficiency air purifiers to help protect their families from pollution caused by the Tijuana River crisis.
Carnaval San Diego con Corazón Morelense is a cultural celebration rooted in the traditions of the Mexican state of Morelos, and thanks to Todos Somos Migrantes, it was brought to San Diego to give Morelense families a place to honor their heritage while sharing it with our broader community.
San Diego’s rich diversity is one of our greatest strengths. I joined Filipino American neighbors from across San Diego County at the 6th Annual Filipino American Friendship Festival to honor the community’s rich heritage, traditions, and lasting contributions to our region.
No family should have to wonder whether opening a window will bring fresh air into their home or expose their loved ones to harmful pollution.
2026 San Diego Comic-Con is here! Dasha, our District 1 Wonder Dog, is ready for her biggest mission yet: welcoming Comic-Con fans to San Diego. 🦸🏽♀️💥🐕
We celebrated 50 years of partnership between Comic-Con International & SD Blood Bank. Together, they've helped collect 108,000+ pints of blood and save countless lives across our region, including Mason Harvey's, a young recipient who reminds us that the truest superheroes are blood donors.💥🩸💪
