We accidentally left the two FA requirement enabled overnight while testing the new version of mastodon. We have turned it off for now as we evaluate the best way to deploy it with the least inconvenience for users.

Now with Mastodon 4.6.3 releases we are working to upgrade. One of the new features we will be enabling is new sign ups requiring 2FA to make credential stuffing not viable.

Sorry for the short network interruption, when adding redundant power to a switch a network card got confused. It showed link as up, but was really down and only a power cycle got things happy.

Big excitement in tonight extended maintenance window, we will consolidate the different servers into one rack, our file server, DB server, and main front end server. During each move there should be a few minutes of down time.

We are testing additional AI scraping filters, please let us know if you notice any strange or different behavior. If all goes as planned you shouldn’t notice a thing.

With the release of Mastodon 4.6 we will wait for a week or two before upgrading. Usually with a major release there is a flurry up minor updates and fixes, and each one would require downtime and testing. But waiting a couple weeks we hope to have a more stable experience for everyone.

Sorry for the temporary outage. Seattle had a wind storm and a circuit breaker popped, and a UPS drained. Everything is back up, but we are now making a shopping list to be able to diversify over more breakers and have better alerting from the UPS systems.

Our #DEFCON.social .onion service has been fixed and all Tor services working again. It turns out our custom default style used an absolute instead of relative path and it broke rewrite rules, which broke the integrity hash, which broke the instance for Tor users.

Periodically searching for support% in accounts tab from all locations and suspending the fake support accounts helps you get ahead of the problem. #FediAdmin
