Little Terns. Teeny-tiny white darts that just about puncture the sea's surface, so slight are their bodies. Delicate fairy-ballerinas, dancing close to the beach at high tide. They look unsuited to life over rough seas, but that's the least of their worries. #UKwildife #Sussexwildlife #birds

Birds, wildlife, words, East Sussex. Almost always on🚶🚴 or 🚌 All photos are phone photos (some with a cheapo macro lens) I'm Green, I'm Green 💚 I'm Tangerine, BFC 🧡

Climate & biodiversity crises are acute. Don't fly, don't eat meat, drive less, consume less... do what we know is essential... and stop waiting for governments and businesses to do it for us - they won't. Take the lead. Not easy to be 'green' in the UK, but it's easy to try. Too late to pussyfoot.
Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Batman hoverfly! Myathropa florea. See the batman symbol? #UKwildlife #Sussexwildlife #hoverflies #insects @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
A first for me... not sure if it's been seen at Rye Harbour NR before? At Castle Water... Rambur's Pied Shieldbug (differences from Pied Shieldbug annotated). Recent arrival to North Kent and inevitably spreading. #insects #shieldbugs #UKwildlife #Sussexwildlife @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
I used to see just one or two Jersey Tiger moths each Summer. This year I'm seeing several each day, including every day for the last week in our Rye garden. #UKwildlife #Sussexwildlife #mothsmatter #insects

Even now, with unrelenting daytime heat, you can feel the finger-tips of autumn reaching into late evenings. There's a whiff of dampness and there'll be a sweet dew in the morning. Nature is thinking ahead and, against all odds, hopes to provide mists and cool breezes that we really don't deserve.
One of at least four Hummingbird Hawk-moths around our Rye garden today and we're still some way off the usual 'peak season'. (Also, Jersey Tiger moth here each of the last three days.) It never used to be like this. #UKwildlife ##Sussexwildlife #mothsmatter #moths @sussexwildlife.bsky.social

Enormous female Oak Eggar moth on the outside of the house, looking fluffy and neat, and from the inside of the house, looking like it might've inspired Bram Stoker. #UKwildlife #Sussexwildlife #moths #insects
There was zero jeopardy in the General Classification of this year's Tour de France and yet it's been one of the best I've ever see. Every stage full of proper competitive, front-foot, aggressive cycling. Superb sport! That's entertainment! #cycling #TourdeFrance
Underwing of a female Common Blue butterfly on Hemp-agrimony at Castle Water Rye Harbour NR. #UKwildlife ##Sussexwildlife #insects #butterflies @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
Story piling in on 'net zero', juxtaposed with news that 110,000 to be evacuated because of wildfires in France. Shameful press. Idiot press.
I'd never wish to 'shame' people for flying. Maybe one day I will need to. But, flying for leisure should be a thing of the distant past. What further evidence do people need? It has to be said.
A spectacular Wasp Plumehorn, Volucella inanis. Give us a twirl! It mimics a wasp, but is completely harmless. #UKwildlife #Sussexwildlife #insects #hoverflies @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
My choice for a National Anthem, if we had a choice... for tonight, at least... You poor take courage, You rich take care, The earth was made a common treasury for everyone to share. All things in common, All people one... Leon Rosselson. This is Billy Bragg's version... youtu.be/SWRpl2S9iwk?...

This is a Public Right of Way on the East Sussex side of Romney Marsh. Many of the footpaths on the marsh are impassable. If we care about it's landscape and it's value to locals and visitors, we need to shout about this. #PublicRightsofWay @eastsussexcc.bsky.social TQ 95148 22241 #RomneyMarsh

Unit! The Bee-wolf. Not a bee, not a wolf, but a solitary wasp that catches Honey Bees to provide food for larvae that hatch from eggs laid in long underground burrows. Found on the sandy areas of Castle Water, Rye Harbour NR. #UKwildlife #Sussexwildlife #insects #wasps @sussexwildlife.bsky.social
We're the most studied, monitored, recorded and yet most nature-denuded country in the world. We're shouting into a vacuum. We'll carry out our WeBS bird counts tomorrow with gusto and hope our voices might one day be heard. But we must do MUCH more. @btobirds.bsky.social #UKwildlife #birds
