Today I'm observing this specimen. It's extending its pseudopodia—so endearing. That's what makes it cute. While taking photos, I stick a Post-it note on it to show everyone around me that I'm taking pictures.

Foraminifera are tiny single-celled organisms that hold clues to Earth’s past. We culture them to understand how they live, how they build their shells, and what their fossils really tell us. The video shows juvenile Quinqueloculina from the Miura Peninsula, about 50 km south of Tokyo.

Today in the lab, I noticed that the foraminifer Planoglabratella nakamurai was multiplying on the rocky reef. It’s always a joy to see reproduction. It’s full of possibilities for new experiments. It’s a bit like how the time spent planning anything is the most enjoyable part.
An article written by Tsubaki, a member of the SUSUME Lab, was featured in the online edition of Nikkei. So cool! Apparently, a reporter from the main newspaper came across Tsubaki’s article in Nikkei Biotech and wanted to feature it in Nikkei e-edition as well. www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZ...

A Kind Request from a Marine Researcher Unless you’re testing the effectiveness of dish soap, wipe off the grease from your lunchbox before washing it You can reuse a scrap of cloth or a tissue, or even use something you’d throw away, like a tea bag. It also saves time and $ so I recommend it😊
In the lab, we use a stereomicroscope at low magnification for routine care tasks such as water changes, and an inverted microscope for real-time observation at high magnification and high resolution.
Today was our podcast recording day! It’s almost our third anniversary, huh? We’re so happy there are people who listen every time.
Spirillina vivipara This foraminifer species is found in marine environments worldwide, from shallow waters to the deep sea. Our group was the first in the world to measure how fast this spiral grows. When it comes to culturing Spirillina vivipara, we’re probably the best in the world. maybe

Newly born Ammonia confertitesta! Right from birth, this foraminifer species eats the same food as adults—in this video, it's feeding on the surrounding diatoms. Seeing this made me wonder if other species change their diet as they grow. Could some foraminifera actually need baby food??? 🤣

The latest issue of Nikkei Science arrived at my place, too. Will multidimensional matrices spark new insights? How will that mechanism be implemented? Since foraminifera also have a behavior for arriving at answers, I think ecological observation of them could contribute to AI research as well.
