Not sure if it's Duo Security of my campus OIT, but someone seriously does not understand what "remember my device" means. :)

I'm really learning a lot of new Latex to write this test. It's a shame that no one - except maybe my TAs - will appreciate it. Maybe you can help appreciate it Internet :D

So thankful to the CA Legislature for their continued support of this incredible program! Cal-Bridge brings together California’s outstanding higher education systems (CCC, CSU, UC) to build pathways that help talented, diverse students pursue advanced degrees and careers in STEM.
Press Release: “Cal-Bridge program receives $5 million in state budget..." Thank you to the legislators who helped us get funding to continue supporting underrepresented students in STEM: Assemb. I just figured out how to make and use avatars on Zoom. I'm sure I'm like N years late to the game but here we go. There's a lot of garbage out there, so getting a couple of minutes of childlike wonder feels good.
One consequence of bringing lunch more is I often ask myself: "Is 10am too early to eat my sandwich?" In my not bringing lunch era I feel like I would got to 2pm and be like - "yeah I'd better go eat something" What is happening to my brain and tummy?!?!
There is a lot of nonsense right now, but I had a really great time at office hours where we talked about conditional probabilities, Bayes' theorem, why my generation was too hard to judge the prequels negatively and I heard a new time-loop theory on BTTF2 that I love www.reddit.com/r/FanTheorie...

Really hoping for a quiet weekend newscycle. This week was way way too much.
Was late to a meeting with an admin. Surprisingly, it was not *for the drama*. But helping a student of mine - a transfer student lost in understanding her new campus rules. She left feeling less alone & (I hope) less confused. Not a flex. Just choosing care > optics. This is my new AY energy.
Do you eat at restaurants? Immigrants likely prepared your food and washed your dishes. Do you live in a house or an apartment? Immigrants likely built your home. Do you buy groceries? Immigrants picked your fruits and vegetables. Now you want to deport immigrants? Enjoy the pain that follows.
Why do I need to know what a chart of accounts is!!??
Quick question for my fellow professor colleagues, if you are running a student program & use a food vendor that isn't in the campus system are you as faculty supposed to (1) know how to add a vendor to said system, (2) add the vendor to said system? Just testing something...
Started my class with vibes like “I’ve been gone for a year & don’t feel like being here. But prob & statistics are beautiful, so let’s talk strategies.” At lunch a student stopped me to say they enjoyed class today 🥰 Surprised & grateful. The institution? Exhausting. The students? Everything.
Maybe I'm just out of practice from sabbatical....but I kind of need another sabbatical. It's not the teaching, I love students, its the lack of support.

Um it's not even Labor Day....and somehow my CostCo has BOTH Halloween and Christmas decorations!??!

Day 2 of being back at work - it's the Applied Mathematics retreat - the first year's are all introducing themselves. So many outdoor hobbies!! Gardening, sports, hiking, cricket.... As an 'indoor cat' myself, I'm glad that there was at least someone who said video games.
Well - it's the faculty retreat today. I suppose this means that Sabbatical is really over. 😭 This was a year marked with personal challenges and growth. So much growth that I'm confident I won't immediately volunteer for everything out of guilt for being gone last year! 😎

I was dreading Monday - then 2 people canceled meetings we had scheduled. Suddenly this Monday is not so bad 😎 Remember, every time you cancel a meeting you might just be making someone's day. (Especially on a Monday.)
Had an academic bad dream/nightmare, overheard a faculty meeting where it was clear I would get my tenure vote would not be positive. I am a Full Professor....have been so for 4 years. Yowza, those back to school bad dreams never stop do they ;)
Still trying to find how to engage with the world... LinkedIn seems to be for bragging... BlueSky is for _______???
This timeline is getting more and more upsetting, I'd better keep doomscrolling until I get to the good news... That's how it works, right!?!?
Even though I'm still tired from #SIAMAnnual, I'm here at #MathFest and keep running into such great folks it lifts my spirits!! Looking forward to the #BIOSIGMAA event this afternoon :D

Every time I deal with University Accounting, I’m reminded that it shares nearly nothing with personal finance. Except maybe existential dread. But - on the plus side, it's a *non-news-related* frustration - and a great opportunity to practice patience and mindfulness.
The review requests are rolling in fast. Did everyone just finish their summer papers? Good for you. Honestly.👏 It’s also great for me - now I can stop pretending I’ll finish anything on my list. 😉
If I never finish my syllabus, then summer never ends and the semester can’t hurt me. Follow for more denial-based productivity strategies.
