This is exactly it for me. If a character is “bad” because their world has made them so, that’s implicitly hopeful; the world can also redeem. But if characters are simply good - and worse, pure - that tells us the world can be divided into deserving and damned, and that‘s the root of fascism

im sort of weary of a lot of younger folks asking me why some characters ‘have to be mean’ and I get that the world is already mean and we deal with it all the time. but part of making stories is to make sense of *why* these systems produce corruption and sadness, *why* environments make this

This has been talked about to death, but mostly through the lens of consumers rather than the artists. Character design is an art; artists at Capcom spent god knows how many hours designing Grace. *Replacing* their character design is incredibly disrespectful to them!
