"No," he said, "millions. One Jewish life, it's 10 million [Palestinians]." Challenged on the racism of his statement, he did not deny it. "Yes, I know," he replied. "But this is the truth, because God chose us [and] because of this you are jealous." This man is a lawyer. www.bbc.com/news/article...

In Prometheus Bound, the playwright Aeschylus puts a line in the mouth of Prometheus: “To look on all friends with suspicion—this disease would seem to be inherent in a tyrant’s soul”

Goffman’s “On Cooling the Mark Out” is good on this. Like con artists, if Republicans take money/rights/lives, Democrats pacify the mark after loss. To pacify them, you need to resonate with the mark and treat the con as legitimate or accidental, not intentional fraud. gwern.net/doc/crime/19...

related to another bizarre feature of political discussion in the US: that it's supposed to mark you as reasonable/bipartisan/fair or whatever that you take these discourses on their own terms. as opposed to marking you as (at best!) a mark

I switched my phone browser to DuckDuckGo and easily switched off AI, and I feel like I have a working search engine again. It’s like getting a useful Google back

Been there. Last year when fighting cancer with good health insurance but a comically toxic employer, I had the thought “I might just be trapped here.” Balanced with “but also my college president, who told me I’m not hard to replace, could end my contract and let me die anytime!”

About 24% of U.S. employees stay in unwanted jobs just for health insurance, a report out Wednesday finds. Up significantly since 2021, the uptick in "job lock" is a concerning sign for the U.S. economy. n.pr/4gQIY5E

Higher ed “viewpoint diversity” discourse is always weird because 1) admin and much of the faculty are conservative and 2) it seems obvious the ideal percentage of conservative faculty is 0%. What benefit would you get from a political philosophy where the defining feature is preserving hierarchy?

I’m at the point in my dispensationalism/zionism writing project—around 1920s—where the oil money is pouring into reactionary organizations and the anti-evolution fundamentalists with race anxiety are calling for a Zionist state and a war on domestic communism. What a world that must have been

I’ve read the Odyssey, the Iliad, Aenied, and Metamorphoses, but my head cannon is basically whatever was in this film I watched when I was twelve, a classic!

I’d read an article called “Equivalent to Smoking 7 Cigarettes: how that fucking awful year or decent college party models biophysical impacts of climate change”

I often think of this question on the Yale climate survey. 47% of people believe they’ve experienced global warming. When actually 100% have. I wouldn’t be surprised if belief drops as the crises worsen. Seeing it with your eyes or feeling it in your throat or lungs builds the dissonance

The air quality today from Canada’s fires is like nothing I’ve seen. Michigan has some advantages for a warming world. Cooler temperatures, Great Lakes. But if being outside in summer is dangerous then what can you do?
