The "selfing syndrome" explained: 'Self-incompatibility' is a mechanism that prevents self-fertilization in plants, in order to maintain genetic diversity in the population. Self-incompatibility can be broken via various mutations, making the plant capable of self-fertilization, 'self-compatible'.
