3 #trees ? In fact they‘re all trunks meeting at 1 base: a giant #AncientOak over 200 yrs old! It has survived much & is now facing extremes of #heatwaves & #drought Yet it remains #leafy & majestic-spreading branches wide-both shelter & #habitat #SaveAncientTrees #Garden4Wildlife #photography -amb

A gigantic ancient English Oak tree-its 3 trunks joined at its massively wide base (obscured by shrubs in this photo taken by amb). This stands in a nearby lane, as it has for centuries. Such trees are irreplaceable & must be preserved. A large lot beyond the lane where this & other ancient trees have been surviving for centuries is destined to be turned into a massive shopping centre by a Big Name grocery chain. We can only hope that when the dreaded day comes that they begin to build that completely unnecessary monstrosity - in the process destroying a large area that has, over decades, become a wild, overgrown habitat full of wildflowers, grasses, shrubs & small trees - the builders will adhere to the TPOs (Tree Preservation Orders) that have been placed on this & several other ancient trees. This tree is home to so many creatures. For that matter, so is the vast corner of land beyond it, left to grow wild. It is a travesty that all that habitat will be lost…all for the greed of landowners & the developers they sell off parcels to. Glad there are TPOs but…So much around us has been paved over. Even on an individual scale, too many people in our neighbourhood are paving or gravelling over much-if not all-of their backyards…Every healthy small tree, mature shrub & flowering plant they rip out to accommodate their lounge chairs or-worse-bloody bbqs, destroys desperately needed habitats in a world increasingly ruined by mankind. Please Garden For Wildlife, however you can. Spare a tree for them. Nurture a potted flowering plant. Sow wildflowers. Set out a tray such as those used under potted plants & keep it filled with clean water -& in shade-placing a couple small stones in it for bees & small birds to climb out after a drink or bath, respectively.🙏help wildlife however you can. They need it more than ever in this heat & drought. 💦 🪴🌸🌳 You could be saving so many vital, valuable lives with any of these measures…& making a world of difference, literally.~💞

The #Moon turning #Night into #Day Amidst a swathe of #clouds a nearly full Moon was glowing so brightly it really did-at this moment-make it seem as if was Daytime. Such a beautiful & amazing phenomenon, w/light blue skies below & #stars twinkling high above #photography -amb #astronomy

This photo, taken by amb, shows a Night sky so illuminated by the bright, full Moon it almost looks like Daytime. It is the masses & layers of white & dark grey clouds hovering across the sky & blurring the actual sight of the Moon that have captured and spread Moonlight across the sky, amplified. Lower down, between streaks of clouds, the sky appears a shade of blue you would see in the Daytime. Yet high above, at the very top of this scene, 3 tiny dots of stars are visible. We are not sure, but they may be parts of the Little Dipper. In the foreground is the dark silhouette of a tree across the court from where we live. This photo was taken at night from out of the second story (or, if you’re in the UK, what’s called the first floor) window. amb has often tried to photograph the Moon, but so many times been unable to capture it properly. Here she’s captured it creating an extraordinary phenomenon: turning Night into Day. She did manage to get another picture showing the Moon that is much darker, with a beautiful moodiness about it. We shall post that another time… -💞

Rare Visitor: Jersey #TigerMoth Usually fr/the #Channel #Island of #Jersey this lovely #moth has begun to stray north due to #GlobalWarming On☀️yesterday it sheltered on bricks in our front🚪alcove. There it stayed all day. We🙏when it left it found Buddleia in our #Garden4Wildlife #photography -amb

amb was surprised to discover this unusual visitor high up on the red bricks of the alcove around our front door. It was a sunny day-quite warm-so between that & the slightly ragged edges of its right wing, we believe it was trying to find safe shelter & rest out of the Sun. The Jersey Tiger Moth is aptly named for its colourings are very like that of a tiger’s: black & cream stripes with bright orange down the centre. Here its wings are close together as it clings to the cool surface of the pale red bricks that line our door’s alcove, way up high. amb saw an old cobweb nearby &-lest some opportunistic spider should come along & endanger this rare creature-she gently cleared all the old webbing away. The moth was unperturbed, thank goodness…We can only imagine it was exhausted, especially having flown from who knows how far away on such a bright, sunny day. We gathered from information online that the furthest from the Isle of Jersey that these moths have been seen-& even in numbers-has been down on the South coast of England, which is far enough from where we are, well inland. amb duly reported the sighting of our visitor online to the relevant wildlife organisation, where they monitor sightings of such rare creatures, following gradual changes that have been happening due to Global Warming, among other manmade causes. The Tiger Moth stayed up on this same spot well into the evening. By this morning, our visitor had gone. As I said in the post, we can only hope this lovely moth, once rested, found restorative nectar in the Buddleia-a.k.a. Butterfly Bush-we have growing in our small front garden-only a few feet from where the moth had taken shelter. There are other plants flowering nearby, too, despite the heatwaves & drought. Whatever happened, we hope this little beauty was rested & well enough to feed & continue on to another safe place🙏Please Garden For Wildlife, however you can, especially in these heatwaves. They desperately need our help: 💦 🌺🪴-tam💞

#Elderberries in #Sunlight w/small #spiderweb behind them. Here’s yet another mini #Garden4Wildlife 🎁from #Nature growing not in a #garden but in a wild #hedgerow #Elderflowers will have fed🐝. Now their deep purple #berries will feed birds & the cycle continues… 🥰 #plants #fruits #photography -amb

Dappled by bright Sunshine & draping down over a pale wooden fence are ovate, green leaves & below them a huge cluster of ripe Elderberries. The thick, otherwise green stem which has branched down is a vivid reddish colour - a change which occurs when berries come to fruition & ripen. There are dozens of these small, round, dark purple fruits for birds to feed upon (& a few spots where it appears they already have been doing so). Most berries have a glossy shine, others a bit “dusty,” but all will be welcome food - especially in this hot weather - for birds & possibly squirrels. Also in this picture - although you may need to look very closely on the left - is a fine spiderweb right behind this cluster. amb spotted that lovely extra detail as she took this photo. Please Garden For Wildlife, however you may be able to. In the terrible heatwaves gripping so much of Europe & the Americas, wildlife need our help more than ever. Even a tray-such as those usually used under a potted plant-filled with fresh clean water & placed in shade-can be lifesaving to birds, bees & other creatures. If you do try this simple but vital way to help, please be sure to add a few small stones to enable bees & small birds to climb out of the water. Make sure the tray is kept clean & refreshed. If you see a barren spot of ground to scatter wildflower seeds, you might try that, watering them in, then letting Nature take over. A pot full of flowering plants-kept in part shade-could prove a lifesaving food stop for bees, which are in terrible decline & desperately need our help. You don’t need to have a grand garden…or even a garden, tbh. A balcony or a stoop that’s in shade can be a place for water &/or a pot of flowering plants. Please try to do just one thing to help wildlife: You could be making a world of difference…literally.🙏~💞

A 2nd #AncientOak #tree uplit by the setting☀️At least 200 yrs old this magnificent #Oak seems to be lifting its outstretched arms to the sky. We’re happy to say this is among #trees saved via a #TPO -Tree Preservation Order #Hazel drapes over where we were #Nature #SaveAncientTrees #photography -amb

Another of the incredibly beautiful & mighty ancient Oak trees that, thankfully, has been placed under a TPO - Tree Preservation Order. This means that although a vast grocery complex/gas station/etc have been approved to be built on land behind this & other ancient trees along a lane, the TPO imposes strict restrictions on any/all construction that has yet to begin. The TPO even protects the area extending beneath the ancient trees, ensuring soil over its network of roots should not be covered or driven upon, as that would compact the soil & lead to great harm. Thank goodness-& local campaigning-for the intense & complex ecological surveys that were done on this tree’s land. Those surveys acknowledged this & several other ancient trees as significant habitats for a variety of creatures, from birds to squirrels, insects &-possibly-even bats. This massive oak’s trunk & canopy are so enormous amb could not capture it all in one photograph from the lane. Behind us-& seen overhanging at the very top of the picture-are leafy branches of a Hazel tree. Those are cropping up in many places-likely the results of squirrels forgetting where they buried hazelnuts. (In fact, we have one such Hazel in our little backyard & it’s spread rapidly even in this heatwave)! If you have ancient trees nearby, try checking with your local authorities or Woodland Trust to make sure they are protected. These enormous trees are incredible living survivors & provide shelter & homes to so much wildlife. As Global Warming/mankind are doing their worst, these giants are worth fighting for, to save them. We were so glad to discover-through amb’s painstaking research-this is among several ancient trees that have been granted TPOs…Hopefully, that will help them to live on…& give life & homes to a world of wildlife amidst their widespread branches & even within the bark around its massive trunk. Too often we take trees for granted. These ancient oaks remind us we must treasure & protect them.~💞💚

But 2 days ago when we passed the mini #Garden4Wildlife planted by someone in the neighbourhood we were delighted to see🐝there! I have vignetted this closeup photo on a beautiful Sunflower, with its golden yellow petals now appearing only slightly tinted amber as they reach its nectar-rich (& soon to be seed-filled) dark centre. Trying to capture some food here is a Buff-tailed Bee, although you can’t see its furry buff-coloured tail in this photo. We now think we have a clue as to who may’ve started a mini Garden For Wildlife on a large patch of otherwise barren soil towards the end of a green-lined walk. Due to long term health issues, the other day was the first time I was able to accompany amb to go on a short walk & have a look for myself. Across from where there had been swathes of Red Poppies & Blue Cornflowers earlier this year (please scroll down our feed for photos of those!) there’s a cul de sac of a few houses, hidden well behind a hedgerow. We now believe someone living there has been the generous person behind this ongoing Garden For Wildlife. In fact, not far from this Sunflower in full bloom there are many more slowly coming towards a state of blooming…and we could see that every plant had just been deeply watered! Whilst we won’t go knocking on doors to discover who the kind person behind this beautiful Gift to both passersby & wildlife is, we’re so glad they have actually been taking time out of their days to not only scatter those wildflower seeds earlier, but to plant many Sunflowers & keep them watered in the blazing open Sunlight that hits that spot most of the day. Sunflowers-as they bloom-will help keep bees & other pollinators alive thru this endless heat & accompanying drought. Once the centres turn to seeds, so many birds will benefit! You, too, could make a difference to the world around you. Please try doing 1 thing to Garden For Wildlife if you are able. Scatter/plant wildflowers on a barren spot & water when needed. Have a dish/tray of fresh clean water IN SHADE (with a couple small stones for🐝& small🐦to escape). You could be saving many little lives!🙏~💞

#Wildflowers Cow Parsley seen at the barren edge of someone else’s #garden Some might think it a weed. But this one stem full of tiny #flowers is great for🐝! So many tiny #blossoms to feed on. #Nature plants a little #Garden4Wildlife here & there. We🙏you will too. #bloomscrolling #photography -amb

A delicate cluster of tiny white flowers make up this lacy wildflower with the peculiar name: Cow Parsley. (The background’s a blur of low green grass/leaves). We spotted a few of these growing out of bare soil on the edge of a neighbour’s property. Gifted by Nature, this plant & others like it nearby are an oasis of nectar for bees right now, during heatwaves that have dried up so many places. Our neighbours may not even know about this small spot-on the edges of their driveway-that’s got several wildflowers cropping up from dusty soil. (Tbh, for a long time they’ve actually been growing front & back gardens wonderfully full of nectar rich plants👏-although theirs is neatly kept, as opposed to our chaotic little plots🫢). But these delicate wildflowers-unplanned-are vital as a “pit stop” for bees. Please Garden For Wildlife, however you are able. From potted flowering plants in semi-shade to just a tray placed in a shaded spot (i.e. trays used under potted plants for drainage) filled with water, kept clean & refreshed often, with a couple small stones in them to help bees or small birds climb out safely. Such things can be lifesaving in this terrible heat. Bees desperately need both nectar & sometimes, even water. Birds need cool clean water too. A pot full of flowering plants provides food for bees & butterflies. It also draws other insects that birds may eat. Water is more vital to wildlife than ever right now. We know many people don’t have a garden. But if you have a balcony, you could provide help to bees & birds, if there’s a shaded spot. Even if you have no garden/balcony perhaps you know of a barren patch of land nearby. One packet of wildflower seeds-scattered then well watered in-could make a Garden For Wildlife. You can make a difference to this ailing planet’s wildlife. Please-if you can-help the bees, birds & other wildlife that desperately need shade, food & fresh cool water in these hard times. You Can make a World of Difference, literally.🙏~💞

Two tightly petalled Queen of Sweden Roses that were-when amb took this photo-an unusual peach colour. All the years we’ve had this shrub rose we never realised that sometimes they emerge this peach colour…before changing completely into either a deep rose/even pale pink (Please scroll down to see those😊). The day after this📸was taken these were already turning pink. Nature surprises!…Queen of Sweden, while a beautiful rose, is not-sadly-🐝friendly: the petals are too many & too tightly wound together for a🐝to reach the centre. We didn’t know this when we bought it in an end of season sale at a garden centre. But even though we try to Garden For Wildlife, this rose proved so beautiful & has survived so much, giving us lovely, fragrant blooms for almost 20 years now, we would never rip it out. The heatwave has been so hard on all wildlife, flora as well as fauna. Still, we have other things that have proved hardy, 🐝friendly & blooming despite the heat & drought. We’re lucky to have a shaded spot for a birdbath & tray of water, too, as well as shade-giving small trees & shrubs where🐦s find shelter & insects (tho we do feed🐦s too). We always ask you to Garden For Wildlife, if you are able to do so. It doesn’t have to be grand. A potted flowering plant, kept well watered & deadheaded, in pt. shade; a tray (i.e. ones used under potted plants for drainage) placed in shade, kept clean & filled with fresh water-(put a couple small stones in so🐝& small birds can climb up/out if needed)-such things can prove lifesaving in the terrible heat that’s become the norm. Even just the water tray in shade could make such a difference! This was their planet before man came along & started this horrific decline into devastating Global Warming. Please do whatever you can to help the creatures that make a difference not only to the natural world, but to your lives, too. Without bees especially we wouldn’t have so many foods that require their pollination. 🙏help them if you can.~💞
