1986 was 40 years ago and I remember feeling the same when Reagan was President. Like my son now, I was 16 and a sophomore in high school. Tonight, while he did his algebra, we waited to see if nuclear weapons would be launched. I had hoped we’d be so much more advanced as a world at this point…

Dark branches of a dogwood blooming from the left into a turquoise and light navy mottled sky. The white blossoms are turned away toward the sun. Each of the four bracts my bears a dark purple blotch at the tip in the center, a scar from when the buds were sealed shut during winter to protect the flowers within. The legend of the dogwood states there Romans used it as the timber on which the cross was built to crucify Christ. The marks signify his blood from the nail marks.

The image is reminiscent of Van Gogh’s “Almond Blossoms”, though the branches in this image start left and veer to the right whereas Van Gogh’s painting has the tree growing straight up and the branches veering in both directions.
