Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has to leave the post match conference after breaking down in tears. He gave it absolutely everything and had been talking about what a toll leading Argentina has taken and his pride in his team. He has been a gent throughout the tournament. The team, perhaps less so.
That might have been the worse World Cup final since the last time the tournament was played in the United States 32 years ago. Spain fully deserved their victory, Argentina came to spoil and forgot to play.
Fair to say this game won’t be winning over many converts to the sport yet. Reminder that this is the longest World Cup in history. Teams have been on the road for about 7 weeks now. Tournament running to 39 days (plus prep time)
Argentina have not been a factor in that first half beyond kicking lumps out of Spain. No shots at all. Eight successful passes in final third. Still, I’d say they’d take that. Stay in the game for as long as possible.
