I finally published the AI essay I’ve had in the vault for almost a year. It’s about moving past “AI good or bad?” and asking better questions about creativity, cognitive friction, water, data centers, responsibility, and what we can redesign. tatendamakoni.substack.com/p/we-keep-as... #AI
I came to America through community college in Texas, then Gordon, Hopkins, research, Botswana, medical school, and eventually the choice to leave medicine. But the real story is the people who carried me through it all. I was chosen. I chose too tatendamakoni.substack.com/p/the-gift-d...

Hamilton wrote his own deliverance rather than be defined by a lie. I know the instinct. MCW confirmed I did not resign, but questions remain. My essay asks how to build systems where fewer people must expose their wounds to correct the record. tatendamakoni.substack.com/p/i-wrote-my...
I was never taught to go quietly. After two years mentoring students through AMP, Workday recorded that I resigned. I did not. My concern is not with my PI, whom I respect, but with a process that removed my access without notice. Substack 🔗: tatendamakoni.substack.com/p/i-was-neve... #academia
When incoming doctors cannot start because of paperwork delays, the cost does not stay inside immigration systems. It lands in hospitals. It lands on care teams. It lands on patients. 🔗: open.substack.com/pub/tatendam... #medicine #residency #immigration
I withdrew from medical school. Then I read The Alchemist. Then I understood what I had actually let go of. Some structures look like purpose until you outgrow them. The sheep were real. They just weren't the calling. Congrats to my brilliant friend Dr. Nkomboni 💐 open.substack.com/pub/tatendam...
A friend sent me an essay from Compact by a medical student named Forrest Bohler, a fourth-year at Oakland University and incoming plastic surgery resident at Penn, and I was ready to drag it. Turns out the more interesting part was what it forced me to think through. tatendamakoni.substack.com

I repeated my first course in medical school three times. This essay begins there. BREATHING IN TENSION explores how humans and institutions survive pressure by metabolizing tension into growth. Body. Mind. Nation. One principle. Subscribe 🔗: tatendamakoni.substack.com?utm_campaign...
Walz: "The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here. There's going to be accountability on things that happened, but one of them is the incredible and immense cost borne by the people of this state. The federal government needs to be responsible."
The thing about this that is so enraging to me is that the FDA blessed running this study and 41,000 volunteers (heroes!) put their bodies on the line so we can benefit and that data is thrown away for nothing. (Btw I have no stock in Moderna or any other pharma) www.nytimes.com/2026/02/10/h...

#IDSky I always email residents rotating with me survival tips for their time of the ID consult service. I like to keep this short and high yield but I am constantly editing and improving the tip sheet. What would you add or remove. It cannot be longer that one page 😊.
“The heart begins working before it is fully formed. Movements do too. Communities respond to harm the same way bodies do. Pressure becomes instruction.” Minnesota is demonstrating this principle in real time. Bodies act under pressure. Communities do the same. 🧧: account.venmo.com/u/Tatenda-Ma...

Sharing my essay featured in the Dec 2025 issue of @acadmedjournal.bsky.social Written for my mom & her physician, Dr. P Hazangwe, it felt too raw to share in August when it went live online. But choosing to be brave! Quoting my fav, “raise your 🥂 to freedom, something they can never take away…”
