Under 16s social media ban commands significant support from the public. From all of our conversations it’s seen as an area where people think individual parents can’t act alone and an area where they need government to help them take back control.

Policing methods need to respond, to provide safe evacuation centres, but most of all anticipate threats, monitor social media, bring in community response teams and recognise the danger. A new political response is also necessary, tackling threats and grievances upfront

The Belfast riots show how communities have become prey to the uncontrolled rabble rousers of social media. But they also exploit some legitimate grievances and poor policy making. Cohesion must be taken much more seriously or this will continue through the summer

An interesting article, if a little fatalistic. Sociology is surrendering to philosophy because it refuses to engage outside of its own bubble. We only talk to each other, and only in ways that make it difficult for outsiders to engage with us. Considering our subject matter, it's quite ironic.

Perhaps this Belfast sociological conference could focus on the specific issue of how to take down the 100 so-called ‘peace walls’ over 25 miles in length, that the enforce the segregation of Protestant and Catholic communities. It’s a long time since the Good Friday agreement after all.

The UK Government, like its predecessor, has not learnt that if you surround yourself with party political advisors, rather than independent professionals, you can never rely on having truth spoken to power. The Mandelson debacle is just one part of this.

Trump says climate change is a hoax. Few people will challenge him though it is the most serious threat that all of us face. The science has been validated by thousands of scientists over 40 years. The first prime minister to accept it was Margaret Thatcher- she had a science background.

How do we create community cohesion when every issue becomes a political division, in which nuanced debate is squeezed out, and seen as a weakness - is this the power of social media?
