I don't get why they need a collective term tbh. What's wrong with saying Britain & Ireland? Or the UK & Ireland? Also how often do people really talk about the both of them collectively for this to be a problem needing a solution?
around brexit, when americans were struggling with the difference between britain / uk / british isles, someone on twitter suggested to me (somewhat tongue in cheek) that "the british isles" is unacceptable and that the politically correct term is "these isles"; or "those isles" if you're american
