Happy 4th of July. A huge day in history! The British began the occupation of Paris in 1815 after their victory at Waterloo. Nice of the Americans to celebrate it ever since.
The second and third Presidents of the USA, Adams and Jefferson, great friends and bitter rivals, both died today in 1826. 200 years ago. It was also the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Five years later, to the day, the fifth President, James Monroe also died.
Today in 1941 Franz Halder, one of Hitler's senior commanders, noted that it was "probably no overstatement to say that the Russian campaign has been won in the space of two weeks." It's probably no overstatement to say that this was one of the biggest overstatements in history.

The nearest analogy - which no one is drawing - would be the Midlothian Campaign in 1880. Gladstone had retired in 1875 and his party had chosen new leaders. But in 1880 he roared back, contesting the Tory seat of Midlothian. When he won, the new leaders resigned & he returned to the premiership.

Britain had one Prime Minister for the whole of the period of conflict in N America during the Revolutionary War. Result: Britain got rinsed Britain had seven Prime Ministers during the French Wars that followed. Result: British triumph PMs are not necessarily an indicator of national fortunes
