In the run-up to the 40th Anniversary of the Clarke Award, it seems timely to repost the essay I originally wrote in the run-up to the 30th Anniversary. Seems obvious today but indicative of how much has changed in the last decade. I will have a shortlist review up by the time the award is made.

Huge, if he really goes for this. I'm keeping a balance and so far it has not looked good for Burnham on the basic of Secretary of State for Scotland, Wales, NI appointments (and on keeping Home Sec and Equalities incumbents). To me there are 3 obvious radical things he could do (aside economics) 1/

This is from the editor of the "Economist," and with all due respect, I do not think this is a surprising conflict at all. It's just typical fascist reactionary modernism, going back to Marinetti and the Italian Futurists.

"But then the last part got a lot of attention. I think an important side of Elon is his political side — his role in the Trump administration but also his interventions into European politics. I was, and am, genuinely baffled by the gap between the extraordinarily expansive view of humanity that he shows when he’s talking about the future, and interstellar travel, and being a multiplanetary civilization, and all that stuff and then the kind of tribalism cesspit of social media that he’s in. He says that the most important thing with AI is to ensure that it is truth seeking and curious. Then you look at the stuff that he propagates on X and it’s not truth seeking, a lot of it. It’s caricature. It’s dystopia."

A week in and there is a bounce. We'll see how it plays out, but this poll is hardly a ringing endorsement of the old two party system. The combined vote share of Labour and Tories is down from c. 57% in GE2024 to 50%. The underlying trend is still away from the old system.
