Over 80% of India's elderly could face dangerous heat levels at 3°C global warming, says Lancet study

“Importantly, these hours are not spread evenly throughout the year. They are concentrated between May and September,” Prof Qinqin Kong, lead author of the study, told The Indian Express via email. At more than 3°C of warming, older adults could experience intolerable heat repeatedly during both day and night for several consecutive months, leaving little opportunity for the body to recover. Such exposure would put enormous pressure on access to cooling, electricity, health services and heat-response programmes, Prof Kong said. Why older people are more vulnerable Prof Kong said older people face serious health risks from heat at lower temperatures than previously estimated. Previous studies relied heavily on measurements from healthy young adults to determine when temperature and humidity would become challenging for the human body. Older people are generally less able to regulate body temperature: they sweat less, their blood vessels respond more slowly and their hearts work harder in the heat. As a result, earlier studies may have underestimated the number of people at risk from extreme heat by at least two-fold, she said. Dr Mahaveer Golechha, professor at IIPH-Gandhinagar and a senior heat action plan expert, said the research is a timely reminder that there is no...

The Kuril Islands: how a visit from Putin reignited a 150-year-old dispute between Japan and Russia

Where are the islands and what is their history? Stretching about 1,200km from the tip of the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia to the north-eastern edge of Hokkaido in Japan, the Kurils are a volcanic archipelago of 56 islands. The southernmost island is less than 4km from Hokkaido. The disputed territory consists of just the four islands closest to Japan which were seized by the Soviet Union in the dying days of the second world war. Known in Japanese as Hopporyodo, or the Northern Territories, in Russia they are simply referred to as part of the Kurils. Their history is complex and predates claims from the Japanese and the Russians: they were the indigenous home of the Ainu, whose lands spanned the Kurils, Sakhalin and Hokkaido. When Japan annexed Hokkaido in 1869, it took control of the four currently disputed isles, though it had already codified its sovereignty in an 1855 treaty with Russia. Another treaty, in 1875, gave Japan the whole Kuril chain in exchange for uncontested Russian control of Sakhalin, an island directly north of Japan. In the 1951 San Francisco peace treaty to resolve postwar territorial disputes, Japan renounced the Kurils, but maintained the four southernmost islands were...

Important to remember that most if not all the antivaxxers you ever see or hear are vaccinated against things like measles. Their whole movement is forcing children to take the risks that they never do (because they think children are property)

US child vaccination rates have plunged since before the pandemic, with kindergarten classrooms in more than 70% of counties now lacking herd immunity against measles.

Richard Tice is RIGHT to say we should enjoy the heat & stop fighting the climate crisis: It’s a boon to the air conditioning industry. We don’t have to mow the lawn as there is no lawn. Oldies dying off relieves the social care system. Lots of water sports to enjoy in Winter!😊

We need two Arday inquiries: 1) Into racist (and misogynistic) bullying by UK press and social media accounts (see also Diane Abbott); and 2) into the duty of care that HE has for its minority staff - a duty of care that in my repeated experience is reserved primarily for white male sex offenders.
