sorry for not posting for so long, but i'm making great progress and excited to share more about the game soon! here's a look at how the procedural character controller makes simple obstacles challenging and fun:

lots of work to make difficult traversal feel natural, fraught and fun. the player controls which direction emmer faces, so you have to rotate her to walk across narrow stretches.
some debug for walking the boulder. big red arrow is user input, big white arrow is the force i'm applying to the boulder, black circle is where i want emmer to walk toward, and the series of smaller arrows are lower level controller stuff.

highly recommend making a fully procedural character controller, there's no way you'll spend too much time on it.
