Check out DNEG's list of 886 VFX artists creating all the CGI and compositing for the shots in #TheOdyssey that were not finished practically, in-camera. www.dneg.com/our-work/the...
For The Odyssey, Matt Damon was created with a puppet instead of relying on CGI
Seeing all the DNEG CGI artists on Linkedin point to their name in the credits of The Odyssey after crunching on its CGI for months and then going to social media and seeing everyone say how it avoided CGI is something else. (actually it's not something else -- it's the same as always)
Raise your hand if you think these two look identical

This is disappointing. You would think a low budget production would be more honest and down to earth, giving credit to the people who made their movie, but no. Listen to "Primate" (2026) dissing their own CGI by Outpost VFX. Video by @vsgro.bsky.social www.tiktok.com/@v_sgro/vide...
May 2026 be the year this marketing strategy finally ends? I’m honestly tired of speaking on how lying about methodology is harmful for on set and post production crafts, and how we need to start bein...

Besides carrying our interstellar address, descriptions of our DNA and instructions on how to build a 1970'es record player, Voyager contains this photo to tell aliens what kind of people they are dealing with (there is no joke here, this is an actual photo on Voyager)
Accurate. I love all things related to filmmaking, but every single post about older filmmaking is "DID YOU KNOW STANLEY KUBRICK TIED HIS SHOELACE WITHOUT CGI" and it's so exhausting. It's all movie magic, you can celebrate one without pitting it against another. www.youtube.com/shorts/qzuH0...

The internet is going to turn me against practical effects in movies I swear to god. Its getting to the point that where every single compliment of CGI sounds back handed. There's no unequivocal praise of it like there is with practical effects. And directors constantly point out when effects
The City of Lost Children (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 1995) was on my top 5 all time favorite movies back then. Now it's just gone. I don't own it on anything but VHS and I haven't heard anyone but myself talk about it for over 25 years. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-F3...

How did media literacy reach a low where any sight of any set is seen as "OMG REAAL SEEETS PRACTICAL FILMMAKING IS SO BACK". They never. Stopped. Buildings sets.
From 2018: "Every once in a while, Twitter is great. Like the time a bunch of film directors dunked hard on an ignorant VFX take."
Project Hail Mary used ZERO CGI for the glasses hanging from Ryan Gosling's ears and Sandra Hüller singing Karaoke, opting instead to rely on practical effects
Having just watched Project Hail Mary (which is 100% perfect and amazing) I need more awesome sciency space stuff, so re-watching Ad Astra. It's phenomenally stupid, and endlessly awesome and fascinating. Every set piece is a masterpiece.
Tars was built as a fantastic on-set puppet. AND, was 100% CGI in shots like this. Things are rarely one technique only. A practical effect on set does not mean "no CGI".
VFX breakdown rules are weird. MI7 pushed “practical” but released CGI breakdowns to get VFX Oscar and got nominated. MI8 had similar CGI but hid it to keep the “practical” angle and got ignored. Predator Badlands released breakdowns, but couldn’t show talent - so Elle Fanning is blurred.

In Project Hail Mary, the line between puppet and CG is seamless. And as Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller put it, Rocky’s personality came from Arslan Elver and our animation team. While the worl...

Tired of bad CGI? Let's look at the good stuff! Here are 4 tips from the VFX department about how to make good CGI. #1: Shoot as much as possible for real
the piece is worse than the headline and deeply misleads TO BE CLEAR: - in half the shots in which he appears, Rocky is computer graphics animation - Project Hail Mary used LED screens - Top Gun Maverick had all-CG jet sequences, the Dune films had all-CG sequences, Alien Romulus had all-CG aliens
The discourse is still so bad. It's one thing when internet bozo film bros spread misinformation, but when the trades just say stupid stuff like this it's just so overwhelming and depressing. Fun fact: even those movies that you think "rely on 'CGI'" have gigantic practical effects work!
Don't jump onto the "wow Hail Mary didn't use a lot of CGI". It's a lovely mix of great practical and CGI, and HALF of Rocky's performance is CGI, and the CGI interiors just used roto and greyscreens instead of greenscreens.
This is what "practical puppet" and "no green screen" means
