Apple's iCloud File Sharing Left Ex-Employees With Access to Secret Documents

The way Apple combines work and personal iCloud accounts left some employees able to access confidential documents after departing the company, reports _The Information_. The site spoke to more than half a dozen former Apple employees who were unknowingly left with access to sensitive content. > The former employees said many Apple files they had been shared on over their careers at the company—including planning documents for product launch events—continued to sync to their personal devices through the iCloud storage service after they left Apple. In some cases, they even received notifications about fresh updates to the documents. Some former employees said they were petrified to delete the files for fear that doing so would attract Apple's attention. Apple files get mixed in with employees' accounts because the company encourages them to use their personal Apple Accounts with their work ‌iCloud‌ account. Employees are given a 2TB ‌iCloud‌ plan and are able to merge the storage with their existing Apple Account or create a new account. Since only one primary account can be signed in at a time, most opt to use their existing account to avoid having to carry two iPhones. Apple has a managed folder for workplace files that it revokes access to when an employee leaves, but some internal documents aren't saved there automatically and shared files end up mixed in with personal content. Employees can also retain access to iMessage chats and files shared via the Messages app. Lingering access to Apple systems is central to Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI. In its filing, Apple alleged that former employee Chang Liu breached Apple's systems using a "rare, previously unknown authentication bug" to download files while he was working at OpenAI. Apple told _The Information_ that the OpenAI lawsuit is unrelated to any files left available on ‌iCloud‌ and that it does not pursue legal claims against former employees who accidentally have Apple documents in their personal ‌iCloud‌ accounts. > This case is about OpenAI employees wrongfully taking Apple's secret and confidential information regarding our unreleased technologies, processes, and products. Nothing in the filing relates to documents shared by, or stored in, iCloud. Former employees say Apple does not do a thorough enough job going through personal devices to remove sensitive files that have been stored in ‌iCloud‌. In a now-settled legal dispute, chip company Rivos claimed Apple intentionally lets former employees retain access to files "as part of a planned effort to generate a pretextual basis to sue the employees and their new employer for 'stealing' Apple material." In the Rivos case, an employee was targeted for keeping work files in his personal ‌iCloud‌ account. Another former Apple employee sued by Apple, Gerard Williams, countersued and accused the company of using intimidation tactics to scare people thinking of leaving. Apple sued Williams for breach of contract after he started processor company Nuvia, presenting extensive phone and text records of his communications. The court rejected Williams' claim, and Apple dropped the case in 2023. In 2025, Apple also accused former Vision Pro engineer Di Liu of downloading thousands of corporate documents to his personal cloud storage shortly before leaving the company for Snap. _The Information_ does not outright suggest Apple is purposefully allowing former employees to retain access to ‌iCloud‌ files, but points out that Apple's use of ‌iCloud‌ for file sharing and its incomplete wiping of employee accounts are at odds with its heavy focus on privacy and security. Snowflake Volunteer, an Android app to help people bypass censorship

Bypassing censorship comes down to two challenges: disguising internet traffic from censors while making an open network easy to reach. Snowflake is particularly effective at tackling both of these challenges. It disguises a user's traffic to look like a video call and routes it through volunteer-run proxies using short-lived connections, making the traffic harder to detect and block. **That's why it's important to have a large and healthy pool of volunteers always available. To achieve that, Snowflake has to be easy to use and deploy, ideally on the devices and with the services they already use.** Up until this point, volunteers could use browser extensions, a website embed, a command-line tool for desktop, and on Android they can use Orbot's _Kindness Mode_. During the first half of 2026, the Snowflake broker saw an average of approximately 146,000 unique volunteer proxy IP addresses checking in each day1. Roughly a third of those were associated with Orbot's Kindness Mode. Kindness Mode also makes volunteering tangible by showing users how many connections their proxy has supported. Seeing how much capacity that feature contributed, Bloco, an Android app studio in Portugal became curious if a standalone app, focused just on volunteering proxies, could reach even more helpers. They reached out to Tor's anti-censorship team which had plans to work on a similar project, but had not yet had the capacity to develop it, yet. So, Bloco took on the task of building such an app. The motivation grew out of the team's work with OONI (Open Observatory of Network Interference), where they saw how NGOs and activists rely on anti-censorship tools to stay safe and connected. After discovering how easy it was to volunteer a Snowflake proxy, the team members wanted to contribute their skills and expertise to an open-source project they cared about. ## A dedicated app for Snowflake volunteers The Bloco team built on the foundations already developed by the Guardian Project for the mobile Tor ecosystem, including IPtProxy. It's an easy-to-use library that brings together the tools and ongoing pluggable transport work needed to integrate Tor into mobile apps, making it easier to keep censorship-circumvention technology current and reuse it across new apps. With these libraries already in place, that make it easy to build Tor apps for mobile, Bloco was able to focus their effort on: * Making sure the app runs successfully in the background for as long as possible, while using as little battery as possible. * Getting the user experience right, so everyone understands what the app is for, and can configure it correctly and according to their internet setup and capabilities. * Keep volunteers motivated by showing statistics of how much they're helping across time. The result is Snowflake Volunteer, a single-purpose app that gives volunteers control over when and how they contribute. Users can allow it to run in the background, restrict it to unmetered networks such as Wi-Fi, choose to run it only while the device is charging, and set a limit on how many people it can help simultaneously. Once enabled, the app automatically connects with people seeking a Snowflake proxy and helps route their connection to the Tor network. After an initial round of testing and feedback with the Tor community, Snowflake Volunteer was launched publicly in April. In May, we saw an average of approximately 1,300 daily unique proxy IP addresses. By June that had risen to approximately 1,700 per day–an increase of 29% in one month. During this initial period, activity reached a high of more than 2,100 daily proxies. This suggests that a dedicated app can bring additional volunteers into the Snowflake community. ## Become a Snowflake volunteer by downloading Snowflake Volunteer Snowflake Volunteer is available on F-Droid and Google Play. Linux has crossed a major milestone in North America, with the open-source operating system now accounting for 10.65% of desktop usage in the region, according to Statcounter’s latest figures for July 2026. The result places Linux firmly in double-digit territory for the first time in Statcounter’s North American desktop operating system statistics. For comparison, Statcounter recorded Linux at 5.52% in June 2026, so the share nearly doubled in one month. As expected, Windows remained the dominant desktop operating system, while Apple’s OS X and macOS categories continued to hold a substantial market share. Linux reaches 10.65% desktop share in North America. However, the sharp monthly increase needs context. Statcounter’s June figures included an “Unknown” category that accounted for 9.24% of North American desktop usage. Its reduction seems to have coincided with Linux’s rise, possibly indicating better identification of previously unclassified traffic. That does not invalidate the 10.65% result, but the increase should not be seen as millions switching from Windows or macOS to Linux in July alone. Part of the jump may reflect changes in detection, classification, or Statcounter’s sample composition. Still, Statcounter is not the only major web measurement platform showing Linux with a substantial presence on North American desktops. Cloudflare Radar data, filtered to desktop HTTP traffic from North America over the previous 28 days, also places Linux at a notably high level. HTTP requests by OS time series for North America by Cloudflare. Importantly, the two services use different datasets. Statcounter bases its statistics on page views from its analytics network, which covers over one million websites and processes more than three billion page views monthly. The company measures usage by page views rather than counting unique users or installed systems. Its figures update daily and may be revised during a 45-day quality-assurance period. Cloudflare Radar, meanwhile, derives its operating system distribution from HTTP requests observed across Cloudflare’s global network. Consequently, neither source should be seen as a literal census showing exactly one in ten North American desktops run Linux. They just measure the relative share of observable web activity linked to different operating systems. Cloudflare’s unfiltered figures may include automated requests unless human traffic is classified. This is especially relevant to Linux, widely used for servers, automation, development environments, and headless browser workloads. Still, two large independent datasets pointing to a stronger Linux desktop presence make the Statcounter result harder to dismiss as an anomaly. The milestone comes after years of steady improvements in the Linux desktop ecosystem. Hardware compatibility has advanced, installation has become simpler, and mainstream distributions now offer polished desktop experiences requiring little command-line knowledge for everyday use. Linux gaming has transformed through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, the Steam Deck, improved graphics drivers, and broader Vulkan support. Meanwhile, growing frustration with Windows hardware requirements, advertising, account integration, telemetry, and forced interface changes has pushed some users to explore alternatives. However, none of these factors alone proves the cause of the latest increase, and Statcounter does not provide demographic or motivational data to explain the change. Still, they are part of a broader environment in which moving to Linux is more practical than it was a few years ago. The Steam Deck may have also contributed indirectly. Although primarily a handheld gaming device, its Linux-based SteamOS has introduced a larger audience to Linux gaming and shown that the operating system can deliver a polished consumer experience without requiring users to understand technical details. There is also growing influence from developers, privacy-conscious users, educational institutions, and organizations seeking greater control over computing environments. Plus, Linux distributions increasingly provide mature support for productivity workloads, web applications, communication platforms, creative software, and development tools. For now, the safest conclusion is that Linux has surpassed 10% of measured desktop web usage in North America according to Statcounter, not necessarily 10% of the region’s installed desktop computer base. But even with that distinction, crossing the double-digit threshold remains notable. Linux has spent decades described as perpetually close to a desktop breakthrough. So, maybe, just maybe, we’re really approaching a famous running joke and long-standing prediction: “Year of Linux on the Desktop.”
