The Sampson Lab for Kidney Genomics at Boston Children's Hospital uses #genomics to discover the causes, treatments, and cures of nephrotic syndrome in children

Think of your kidneys like filters. When they are working properly, they keep important proteins in the blood. Proteinuria happens when extra protein shows up in the urine, which can be a sign the kidney’s filtration system needs a closer look. Tiny word, important clue.

Today's word is "Genomics," The study of the genome, and one of our favorite words in the Sampson Lab. By exploring how genes interact with one another and the environment, genomics helps researchers better understand the genetic basis of disease. What word should we define next? 👀

Meet Caleb Holmes, our summer intern! ☀️ Caleb is an undergraduate student at Rutgers University and is joining us through the Harvard Summer Research Program in Kidney Medicine. We’re so excited to have him with us this summer and can’t wait to see him learn and grow🧬💚

What is the BIGKiDs Study? BIGKiDs, the Biobank to Illuminate the Genomics of Kidney Diseases, is a research study at Boston Children’s Hospital focused on understanding the genomic factors that may contribute to nephrotic syndrome and other proteinuric kidney diseases.

Chronic kidney disease is complex, and every patient’s experience can look different. Research helps us look beyond the diagnosis. At the Sampson Lab, our work in kidney genomics and nephrotic syndrome research helps move kidney care forward, one question at a time.
