Kasha 火車 Yokai Cat, Highway to Hell. This member of the flaming wheel yokai category drives the bodies of the damned to Jigoku, Buddhist Hell. oil pastel. Monster Cat.

Yokai Akaname 垢嘗 muck-licker of the moldy bathhouse! Its often drawn in beastly or boyish form but who's to say the ladie's side doesn't get dirty enough to get its own roachlike yokai? Oil pastel sketching at an Osaka cafe.

Akaname (muck-licker), born of grimey Edo-period floating boathouses. It may have flourished in wooden spaces, but modern bathing rooms aren't as sustaining. That toe-foot could grip into moldy wood, but slick plastic or stone? Oft depicted as a boy but a bathhouse ladies' side can get grimey too!

Falstaffian version. The classic Japanese tale of the favor-repaying tanuki who turns into a teapot & up lives it up with monks is as jolly & universal as tea itself. I imagine he'd be just as well-received at a European salon.

Mothman: Follows a long human tradition of weird half-seen creatures from dubious anecdotes that may or may not foretell disaster / just be a normal creature (in this case, a sandhill crane) that some intoxicated or distressed guy saw in bad lighting.

Watercolor: Puss in Boots aka Le Chat Botté aka Il gatto con gli stivali (with appearance by medieval killer rabbit, look it up). OG wingman, originally 16th century Italy, made famous by "Shararu" 😆 Perrault.

Reading a 30-year-old book about mindfulness, it's amazing how the clouded default state of fixation on personal problems, past & present, is one we would aspire to, unable to resist the escape from thinking of our phones. The floor is so much lower since social media took over. 📚💙

Vampire Watercolor

I love spooky season. 🎃 I wish it could go on longer. I used to think stores that put up Christmas decorations before Halloween were crazy but now that I have holiday merch I see customers really do start buying Christmas stuff mid-October!

Sketching the vampire monster Kovvmory with its bat friends & munching delicious hamburger steak & Japanese dessert at a cute Osaka cafe. Music: pixabay.com/users/melodi...

After tearing through ~380 pages in 2 days, I'm 60 pages from the end of The Buffalo Hunter Hunter and I would just stop. Now. To wait a couple weeks for someone to catch up & discuss it with me. One of these days I'll join a suitable book club.

Oil pastel. Little is known about the Kovvmory, widely said to be a kind of vampire. Kovvmory seem to be in a stupor or dream as they bob heavily thru the night sky. Japanese art often pays homage by directly referencing other works so I included bat poses from Kawanabe Kyosai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
