It’s notable that Christopher Nolan’s last two films have both been about men regretting the crucial role they played in the downfall of civilization. I’m choosing to believe this is Nolan’s attempt to atone for his role in launching the SnyderVerse.

Our dogs just got a Wicked-themed Bark Box, and the “magic wand” stuffy is, uhhhh… quite unnecessarily phallic
Day 4 progress, and David Byrne’s face has entered the chat. (As have the faces of Paul Rudd, Nicholas Cage, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, Joaquin Phoenix, ScarJo, Zac Effron, and at least two sex offenders)

I love her so much. The knowing smirk when she first picks up the ukulele and stares at the camera… chef’s kiss.

Reading every single Batman comic published between mid-1986 and mid-2011. (I’m currently at January of ‘94)
What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.
While you’re all seeing the next crop of A24 films in Telluride, Venice, and Toronto, I’ll be at home, doing the 1,000-piece A24 jigsaw puzzle. We are not the same.

We talk a lot about the importance of voting but in doing so, we romanticize it, and I've come to believe that's a mistake. It's not romantic, it's not glorious, it's not an expression of your ideals or your identity. It's selecting the best outcome for the most people. That's all it is. Do that.
I LOVED Tony (the Anthony Bourdain movie). Great editing, great cast, great needle drops, great story about an asshole learning not to be an asshole (I relate). Leo Woodall is fast becoming My Guy, and Emilia Jones is fast becoming My Crush. Antonio for Best Supporting Actor!

Hey folks, I have a favor to ask anyone that has a few minutes. For the last month or so, I wrote a big series of 15 Substack posts counting down the best music of 1976. I posted all of them here multiple times, and they generated virtually no likes/clicks/comments at all.

There are few things (nothing?) that will make you feel more utterly despondent about everything than being forced into a conversation with the guy next to you at the bar who doesn’t see a meaningful difference between the two parties
It’s also funny/sad that 9 to 5—a crowd-pleasing celebration of progressive values—became a mega hit just a month after Reagan’s election.
I’m watching 9 to 5 right now, and it occurred to me that the ages of the actors line up *perfectly* for it to be a sort of stealth sequel to Mad Men.

These Clippers punishments are amazing. But honestly, I’m shocked Kawhi didn’t get suspended. From the moment this all started, I thought that was the single most likely outcome.

Even though we’re eight months into the year, I always think of September 1 as the halfway point of the movie calendar. (And the second half kicks off with Venice and Telluride.) And I think 2026 has been the best pre-September movie year that I can ever remember.

In some *good* octogenarian news, Mavis Staples is thriving at 86. Her voice has a bit of gravel now—like 80% Classic Mavis and 20% Tom Waits—but she still killed it, and she’s such a joyous stage presence.
