we could probably pull on this thread and get to something about wider intellectual and emotional displacement in society (as in having no place to call an intellectual or emotional home) and how we desperately need spaces where we can let guard down, stow our baggage, and trust each other a bit

I think a big conflict on this web zone is that some people see it as a space for brisk, rousing political debate and believe blocking defeats that purpose, whereas some people don't want any part of that and just want to fuck around with their friends

interesting that a healthcare provider my partner has seen regularly for years recently decided, coincidentally at the same time they moved their billing “in house”, she somehow owes money for things she + our insurance paid for going back to march of 2025

For many years, people didn’t randomly film others in public—not because we didn’t have the technology, but because the social contract said you didn’t do that. That’s why Meta is going full court press on their PR and celebrity endorsements. They remember how people ran google glass outta town.

got super lucky to see the pro shot premiere at tribeca while i was up there apartment shopping Hadestown is truly an incredible piece of media and while seeing it on stage definitely has a level of extra magic, i do love a good proshot, and this one was among the best i’ve seen

as i’m procrastinating on taking the dog out until it’s maybe a little less that 100°, i’m thinking about what it would mean to commit to an ethic of humane scale technology, in a similar spirit to say shaker furniture or diy scenes

just to underscore this: i realized it’s actually been gnawing at me for a while now and i hadn’t been able to put words to it, but it really says something dark that so many people can’t or won’t even extend the basic courtesy of intention to strangers

but mostly i’m thinking about how unserious we’ve been as a society (with countless counter examples of people and groups and subcultures and scenes who have gotten it right) about our responsibilities and duties to each other around care, compassion, and even just basic fucking civil inattention

in my experience this is true about international travel, domestic travel, local travel, and even wilderness travel (the latter is a bit dangerous for real but the forum questions are often focused on the wrong things, like “how to defeat an attacking bear” vs “how to not fall over a waterfall”)

interestingly enough "can we use a normal setting" is one of the main frictions between my partner and I lol her, from a culture (Florida) of perpetual AC, will set the thermostat to 72 when it's 90 out me, from a culture of window AC (Northern California), frequently happy with 10ºf cooler inside

You don’t have the right to choke your kid regardless of your beliefs. You shouldn’t have the right to prevent life-saving medical interventions, especially when they’re so young and vulnerable and the interventions are extremely time-sensitive

if you think something being "natural" or "plant-based" makes it healthy and something being made in a lab and loaded into a syringe is inherently dangerous, you're an idiot. you should lose access to your kids if you harm them due to this belief www.propublica.org/article/more...
