Thank you to all the MLA members who participated in this afternoon's open discussion session with @tinalu888.bsky.social, Herman Beavers, and Waïl Hassan and shared how the current threats to higher ed are affecting you and how the MLA might help. 1/3

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.
i mean, the president's executive order isn't a goddamn law! as far as this doctor is concerned, who cares what the president says!
I was yesterday years old when I learned that “condominium” is an 18th century word. It’s con-dominium (“shared dominion”) not condo-minium. You’re welcome!
Let me be a cautionary tale. Don’t send in passport photos in glasses.

You should be able to go to your local Democratic Party headquarters and get help with anything you need help with. Don't have a printer and need to print out a form? We gotcha! Need help applying for a passport? We gotcha! Need a bathroom or a sandwich? We gotcha! I'm not kidding in the least.
"Democrats need to organize their future politics around the simple reality that the establishment media is structural hostile to the Democratic party."
Wired for the GOP
This column, by Alexander Burns, the head of news at Politico, is a rich example of the DC logic that only Democrats have agency and it’s only to Democrats that standards, norms…

And the next time one of you starts to say "but they voted for it" about someone in a super gerrymandered state, I want you to remember that I had 25 local races on my ballot where I had republicans running unopposed. Unsurprising republicans swept every race.
Just reposting this content one more time. NC Supreme Court seats are elected; so yes the entire House came down to one local seat or two. If we’d won the NC Supreme Court, the Dems would have had a House majority.
The final House results have now landed as 220-215 for the GOP. That means the House majority came down to the 3 NC seats the GOP flipped thanks to its brand new gerrymander. And that gerrymander hinged on NC's supreme court flipping in 2022. I wrote this last month: boltsmag.org/state-suprem...

Omg I couldn’t love this more. Maybe one day I will name an orange dog 柿子. And check out how long lived so many of the dogs were—a number made it to their early teens.
1. How seriously did late imperial China's rulers treat their pets and/or job of archiving their everyday lives? Here're 2 registers from the No. 1 Historical Archives of the Qing royal family's cats and dogs (with names & years of birth/death). Two cats died after 9 years & one dog after 15 years.
Totally agree. The older I get the more I realize complicated conspiracies are impossible. People are way too incompetent.
one of my iron clad beliefs is that there are very few actual “schemes” in the world. instead, there are just a lot of stupid, venal people and quite a few of them hold positions of real power and authority
This genre (“why Trump won”) consistently muddles two separate problems: 1) the many many reasons folks voted for him (and yes the MSM is one); 2) the swing voters who would have swung the election. Sorry, TNR. If “inflation” voters had voted Dem, we obviously WOULD be swearing in Pres Kamala.
Today, the right-wing media sets the news agenda in this country... Even the mighty New York Times follows in its wake, aping the tone they set disturbingly often. newrepublic.com/post/188197/...
Obama's '08 campaign won the biggest margin of victory in the last 30+ years. Within hours of his inauguration, Republicans went to dinner and agreed to oppose him on every single item. Two years later, they won 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats.
So this the kind of Trump admin that progressives on the Hill and some leftists want to play clever game of footsie with around issues on anti trust and credit card fees?
Absolutely grueling to read.

I am such a believer in this. Down-ballot is the way. It’s also how we build a sustainable future of good leaders and infrastructure to elect and support them, as well as the movements they represent. We don’t just need strong candidates. We need strong organizers, managers, CoS, grassroots, etc.
I’ve been organizing in rural areas since the first Trump administration. Rural Dems can make the difference in races at the top of the ticket. Republicans have all of the electorate they’re ever going to have. Organize to turn out 5% to 10% more Dems in rural spaces. Watch what happens…
