Today I got another "No". The harsh reality is that I've gone a year now unemployed in science - despite hundreds of applications. It's frustrating and disappointing to continuously be reminded that a year after earning my PhD, I have nothing to show for it. But I love science so I'll keep applying.

I couldn't have asked for a better lab or a better topic for my PhD. 💚💛💚💛
Are the mRNA vaccines incredible? YES! Are the mRNA vaccines perfect? No. Have the mRNA vaccines saved millions of lives? YES! Can we make the mRNA vaccines even better? YES! Can we use mRNA vaccine technology to prevent and treat many other diseases? YES! Fund mRNA research!
By far one of the coolest things I saw during my hours of slide observations: You're looking at what are supposed to be the leaflets of the mitral valve. However, they've become so overwhelmed by pneumococci (purple clouds) that they've transformed into the masses you see below.

I'm FINALLY rested enough to share that I've officially defended my thesis! I was so glad to get to share my work with everyone! Be on the lookout out for the publication... Coming soon 😉
My lab's looking for #postdocs! (We do some really cool science 😎)
Hi all, a postdoc position is open in my lab @ UAB. If you like Gram+'s, molecular biology, and pathogenesis consider applying. We study how S. pneumoniae causes disease. See the ad for details: uab.edu/postdocs/pro... scholars.uab.edu/3120-carlos-... Please share if you know someone

Started my 2025 with a trip to Baltimore for a bioinformatics intensive with our long-time collaborator Dr. Hervé Tettelin! A very eventful and very productive week! 😄
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
