Interestingly, for the Booker Prize, the judges are permitted to do call-ins - i.e nominate a book not submitted/called-in by a publisher. Given how costly it is to participate, the Booker folk check with the publisher to see if they'll accept the inclusion. It's an odd option.

Am reading Make Believe by Mac Barnett. Con: it's condescending Pro: it's mercifully short. There's a story about the 3 aunts which made me laugh, but only because it reminded me of Magrat Garlick, Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, who'd wipe the floor with Barnett. Will read on though.
