#WIPSnips prompt 11/08, #test (Taken from 'For the Love of God')

“You love them,” Luce said softly. “But you love them at a distance. You hear their prayers – you hear them frightened, grieving, begging for help or mercy or courage, wanting the sky to open and answer back. But no one prays for violence, or cruelty, or greed, Gina. You don’t hear that part.”
“And you don’t hear anything else,” Gina replied. She pushed herself up a little straighter. “You accuse me of loving them at a distance, and yet you condemn them from the same place. You test those who are already skewed to fail. You read the records after the damage. You weigh the soul after the choice. You see the wound and call it the body.” Gina’s voice thinned, but it did not soften. “You have shown me the nine in ten for two thousand years. But not once have you looked properly at the ones beyond your verdict.”
Luce opened her mouth to argue, then closed it again with her lips pressed to a thin line. The rebuttal should have been easy. Somehow, it wasn’t.

#lesficfri prompt, #smile (taken from current WIP, #ForTheLoveOfGod)

Her hand went limp in Luce’s, and Luce frowned. “Gina? Hey. Can you hear me, love?”
When Gina didn’t respond, Luce was on her feet and out the door in less than a heartbeat. She returned dragging a nurse behind her, then stood by with her teeth gritted as the angel checked Gina’s pulse, adjusted the monitor, and murmured something over the faint gold lines on the screen.
Finally, the nurse finished what she was doing, turned back to Luce, and said disapprovingly, “She’s all right, My Lady. You’ve tired her out, that’s all. She’ll likely wake again shortly.” Her frown darkened to warning. “If you want to stay, wind it in.”
Luce raised an eyebrow as the angel walked out, but she didn’t fire back. Instead, she composed her face and turned back to Gina, gently taking her hand again.
For a long time, Luce simply sat with her, holding her hand, tracing circles over Gina’s skin with her thumb. Finally, Gina stirred with a small groan, blinked slowly back to consciousness, and tightened her grip on Luce’s fingers.
“You’re… still here…”
Luce managed a small, unsteady smile. “Of course. We weren’t done arguing yet. Unfortunately I can’t take part anymore, though, because I’ve been told off by the nurse.”

#WIPSnips prompt 03/08, #thrill (taken from "For the Love of God")

Luce sighed. “Fine. If you insist on banishing me into the wilds of suburban Dunmouth, I shall walk.”
“Good.” Rhia turned back to the table, then stopped. “Actually, while you’re out, pick up some milk.”
Luce stared at her. “Milk?”
“Maybe some paracetamol.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“Milk,” Rhia repeated, reaching for a sticky note and scribbling with vicious pressure. “Paracetamol. Oh – and some printer paper. A-four. White. Nothing fancy. If they’ve got those cheap reams wrapped in blue plastic, get two.”
Luce eyed the note as if it were a summons from an inferior court. “And what, precisely, do you expect me to use to acquire these thrilling objects?”
Rhia looked up.
Luce looked back.
A long silence passed between them.
“For fuck’s sake,” Rhia muttered. She crossed to the hallway, rummaged in the pocket of her coat, then returned with a handful of cash. “Here.”

#WIPSnips prompt 31/07, #twist (taken from #ForTheLoveOfGod)

Rhia stifled a small groan. Tomorrow was going to be a long bloody day. Waiting up for Luce had been a waste of time, and she really wished she hadn’t bothered. What was the point, when the person you were trying to be kind to was such an ungrateful bitch?
Her mouth twisted, and she trudged towards the kitchen.
If Luce really was the Devil, it made perfect sense that Gina was God. The woman would have to be a bloody saint to put up with that much crap.

#WIPSnips prompt 18-07, #next. WIP: #ForTheLoveOfGod

There was no warning. No grand declaration. Not even a hint of intent, at all. One moment she was standing there, all hard-held fury and leather and restraint; the next her fist cracked across Luce’s mouth.
The blow turned Luce’s face to the side, and the silence behind it fell so completely it swallowed the room.
Slowly, Luce turned back to face her, lifting one hand to the corner of her mouth. When she drew her fingers away, gold shone on her skin.
Not red.
Gold.
Blood, bright as molten sunlight.
She looked at it for a long moment. Then, very slowly, she began to smile.
“Well, well…” she drawled. “You pack quite a punch. I’m almost impressed.”
Rhia bristled in front of her, face hard, mouth twisted in fury. Her fists stayed balled, but she didn’t quite move, because the glint of gold on Luce’s fingers – welling at her lip – held her still.
After a moment, she bit out, “What… are you?”

#WIPSnips prompt 13/07, #almost WIP: #ForTheLoveOfGod

A sharp laugh escaped Luce, then, and she dropped back into the chair. “We keep doing this, Gina. Again and again, for two thousand years. We’re stuck in the same damned cycle – only now it’s killing you, and I get to watch you die.”
“That’s not fair.”
“Nothing about it is fair. Sometimes I wish…” Luce leaned forward, and her breath left her in a trembling rush. “…I wish we’d never created Earth at all.”
Gina’s face softened. “Don’t say that, Luce.” Her hand twitched, as if she might reach out. But she didn’t. “Don’t. It has a beautiful history.”
“And a broken future.” Luce scraped her chair closer, too loud in the quiet room. “It’s killing you – and I can’t… I can’t watch it happen.” She held Gina’s gaze, and her voice softened to something almost brittle. “Please, Gina… It can’t end like this.”
Gina blew out softly. “Must you corner me so?”
Luce gave a short, humourless laugh. “Corner you? You are in a hospital bed, darling. You’ve cornered yourself. I’m only trying to show you the way out.”

#WIPsnips prompt 06/06, #happen (The world might not be ready for it, but I'm having such a good time writing this novel 😅)

Scowling, Rhia opened the packet with enough force to send crisps flying. “God dammit.”
“I don’t think ‘God’ would trouble herself with damning such trivial things,” Luce said.
“I’m sorry…” Steph’s eyebrows rose in surprise. “Her-self?”
Luce rolled her eyes. “‘The devil is a woman’ is no problem, but ‘God is’ and all hell breaks loose?”
Steph blushed. “I-I’m sorry, I just—”
“It’s fine,” Luce said with a theatrical sigh. “Happens all the time.”
“Does it?” Rhia asked, genuinely curious.
“Well, no. I can’t say it comes up often, actually.” Luce popped another crisp in her mouth, savoured it for a moment, swallowed, and then said, “I’m not in the habit of having discussions with humans – and no other species in the known cosmos has ever put Gina and me into such narrow boxes.”
Steph’s eyebrows went higher. “Gina? God’s name is Gina?”
Luce fixed her with a flat expression. “This conversation is rapidly boring me.”

Beside her, Rhia raised an eyebrow. “Tribute not to your liking, Goldie?”
“I don’t have an opinion,” Luce replied smoothly.
“Sure looks like you do,” Rhia scoffed.
Luce fixed her with a flat expression. “For the last time, stop reading my face. It’s an unbearable habit. Besides, you’re wrong.”
“Am I?”
Luce huffed. “Stick to your mortal concerns, would you? If it helps you to wish peace for those gone, great. Whatever makes you sleep at night.”
Rhia turned her attention to her drink. Quieter, she said, “Do they not find peace?”
Luce studied her for a moment. At length, she said, “Peace is a long road.”
Nathan leaned around Abi to join the conversation. “Care to clarify?”
“Not particularly,” Luce returned.
Silence stretched, and five expectant faces turned her way.
She frowned. “What do you want me to say? Nothing I explain is going to make a lick of bloody sense to you. You were born yesterday, cosmically speaking. Ask me again when you have a few thousand lifetimes in your pocket.”

A little snippet for #Wipsnips prompt, #pride

Gina’s head dropped back against the pillows. “Oh, Luce… You don’t know what you’re asking.”
Slowly, Luce drew her hand away. “And you don’t know what you’re refusing.”
She got to her feet, sliding her hands into her jacket pockets and fisting them there.
Gina’s eyes met hers, tired beyond pride, beyond performance, beyond even anger.
“This is where we broke, Luce. Right here, on two sides of the same story.”
Luce gritted her teeth.
Quieter, Gina continued, “You still think love means saving me no matter what else has to burn.”
Luce found her voice again. “And you still think love means asking me to accept watching you disappear by inches.”
“I never asked you to watch,” Gina said.
“No,” Luce bit out. “You only made it impossible for me to look away. All I can do is watch.”
“That’s never been all you could do.” Gina’s words were barely above a whisper.
Luce stepped back. “This is pointless.”

A little excerpt for today's #WIPSnips prompt, #three

“You should leave,” he grated, turning his back on her to lean down and check on Gina. “Now.”
Luce sat down in the chair, swung one leg over the other again, and rested her hands on the armrests. “You do not command me.”
He straightened and faced her with a disapproving scowl. “No, but the Source does. Make no mistake, if you are not gone from that chair in the next three seconds, I will invoke the judgement of the highest tier.”
Luce’s fingers tightened on the armrests. She knew him too well. He meant every bloody word.
Slow and feral, she smiled. “All right, little lap dog. I’ll leave your beloved sovereign in peace.” She lifted an eyebrow. “Do tell her I’m pleased she liked the flowers.”
His gaze slipped sideways to the blossoms clutched in Gina’s arms, and when it snapped back to Luce, his expression was murderous.
She laughed, and was gone.

WIP snippet for #vssmagic prompt 15-05 #indignity

One nurse with a silver tray nearly flattened herself against the wall as Luce rounded the corner; another, caught mid-conversation with a physician in pearl-grey robes, broke off so abruptly she forgot to close her mouth.
Luce did not slow.
The bouquet in her arms was large, immaculate, and furiously unnecessary. She held it as one might hold incriminating evidence. White blossoms, delicate and pretty, rested stark against the black silk of her blouse, their subtle perfume trailing in her wake. She had no business carrying flowers. She had even less business carrying these ones. But she had arrived with them anyway, and at this point she was far too deep in the indignity of the thing to reconsider.

The group settled into easy banter, and Luce began to tune out – but then a sudden reference to her pulled her attention back again.
“That someone you know?” Rhia was saying to Steph, and Luce could feel her gaze prickle.
“Nope,” Steph replied. “We clocked her too. Gorgeous, right?”
Rhia sniffed, and her expression darkened. “Trouble, more like.”
Luce stifled a smile. Finally, someone who saw past the surface.
“Kind of trouble I’d fall in with any day,” Tori said with a wide grin.
“Shut up, Tor,” Steph said, throwing a cloth at her. “You’ve already salivated all over her – let someone else have a turn.”

The mugger’s head snapped round at her approach. “Oi,” he snarled. “Piss off or you’re next.”
Luce continued to stroll toward them, her poise exquisite. “And here I thought Dunmouth was a respectable city.”
The man shoved his victim aside and hissed through his teeth. “You deaf? I said piss off.”
Luce smiled. Suddenly, she was beside him. She had him by the throat before he could properly gasp, hauled him sideways and slammed him into the wall with enough force to rattle brick dust loose. Against his ear, she whispered, “Now, now – where are your manners?”
