A couple of pages earlier: "This, then, gives rise to an intemperate technicism which is nothing other than idolatry of the machine and which, through this idolatry, by means of identification, leads to a technocratic aspiration to unconditional power......

Is it just me or is Simondon giving off some serious Technocracy Fascism vibes here? Cincinnatus having some significant Fascism associations... finally, slowly reading thru his "On the Mode of Existence of Technical Objects" (1958), and its not what I expected. @tnwjackson.bsky.social ?

"The arrogance of the particle physicist and his intensive research may be behind us (the discoverer of the positron said 'the rest is chemistry'), but we have yet to recover from that of some molecular biologists, who seem determined to try to reduce everything about the human organism....

Great conversation I had yesterday with the cognitive scientist Tom Froese, about diagrammatic relationships between his "Irruption Theory", Darwin's thought, "difference-first" ontologies, and @drmichaellevin.bsky.social 's work on developmental plasticity: youtu.be/BqX4ycjv-KM?...

You think all the arbitrary specifications of the universe were introduced in one dose, in the beginning, if there was a beginning, and that the variety and complication of nature has always been just as much as it is now. But I, for my part, think that the diversification, the specification, /1

Ends are constituted from difference, and then feed back upon it, shaping the stabilisation/propagation/amplification of subsets of differential variation. There not only remain bases for speaking of finality, it remains necessary to do so. A difference-first ontology enables the explanation of....

There is no longer any basis for speaking of finality: when difference has become the thing itself, there is no longer any basis for saying that the thing receives its difference from an end.

Looking forward to reading. As long as we remember that the cybernetic (Ashby 1956) definition of organisms as thermodynamically open but organisationally (or informationally, for Ashby) is an idealisation. Real organisms are not organisationally closed.

Fantastic paper cuts to heart of new understanding in "physics of life" about importance of organization in organisms. Organization in this sense is a different kind of idea for physics. arxiv.org/abs/2503.03950 @ricardsole.bsky.social @evanthompson.bsky.social @saraimari.bsky.social

Unbeknownst to them, my wife and daughter were channeling the collective unconscious this morning, and ended up rendering this archetypal image of the katabasis of Empedocles (I rushed in and titled it right at the end)

“….instead of understanding the subject as an operation rather than a structure, we come to see that it is an asymmetrical relation that constitutes the subject—an asymmetry between a present operation that always escapes itself and a structure that always belongs to the past. …

“In order for the normativity of a system of norms to be complete, it is necessary that within this very system its own destruction as a system and its possibility of translation into another system must be predicted according to a transduction order.” Gilbert Simondon, ILFI (p 375)
